ARTIST: Chris Calle (Connecticut, born 1961) NAME: Boy with Old Trains YEAR: 1992 MEDIUM: mixed media on board CONDITION: Very good. SIGHT SIZE: 14 x 13 inches / 35 x 33 cm BOARD SIZE: 23 x 19 inches / 58 x 48 cm SIGNATURE: lower right NOTE: This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 29c Toy Train stamp issued October 22, 1992. Nothing quite compares to the aroma of a mother's kitchen on Christmas morning. The scents of roasting turkey, baking pies and steaming plum pudding not only invigorate one's appetite, but also stir memories of Christmases past. Feasting on special occasions is an age-old custom dating back to the ancient days of the hunter and gatherer. Primitive man ate when he could. After a successful hunt he gorged himself on meat ... and more meat. When berries were ripe, he ate berries ... and more berries. With the advent of agriculture, the harvest marked a time of plenty, and people ate heartily when the crops were in. Perhaps the most fabled holiday feast in humankind's history was served in England on Christmas Day in 1770, at Sir Henry Grey's. It consisted of one pie that measured 9 feet in circumference and weighed twelve stone -- 168 pounds. Inside, baked to perfection, were four geese, four wild ducks, two woodcocks, two turkeys, four partridges, seven blackbirds, six pigeons, two rabbits, two cow's tongues, two bushels of flour, 20 pounds of butter and various other items. This meal spawned the English colloquialism: "The Devil himself dare not appear in Cornwall during Christmas for fear of being baked in a pie." PROVENANCE: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. CATEGORY: antique vintage painting AD: ART CONSIGNMENTS WANTED. CONTACT US SKU#: 119487 US Shipping $60 + insurance. BIOGRAPHY: The son of artist Paul Calle.Chris Calle, a graduate of the University of Michigan's School of Art, began his career as an illustrator and designed more than 35 postage stamps for the United States. He has created more than 200 stamps for the United Nations program. In 1989, on the 20th anniversary of the moon walk, the USPS asked Chris Calle to design an anniversary stamp. Together with his son Chris, Paul Calle returned to the subject of space exploration with a pair of stamps issued in 1994 in honor of the 25th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission and the first manned moon landing. In the movie "First Man" starring Ryan Gosling, Chris Calle played his famed illustrator father. Much of Chris' artwork is related to the theme of Space Exploration. As an official NASA artist, he covered two of the early Space Shuttle missions, producing artwork that is now in the collections of the National Air and Space Museum and NASA. His outstanding work also appears in many publications and is represented in corporate, private, and museum collections throughout the world.

ART SIZE: 16 x 21 inches / 40 x 53 cm BOARD SIZE: 19 x 25 inches / 48 x 63 cm SIGNATURE: lower right NOTE: Someday, if science fiction becomes fact and people live on other worlds, space shuttles may carry mail to huge scientific and industrial communities set up throughout the solar system -- and beyond. Assuming it proves possible and profitable to build such communities, exciting new technology would come into use, making space stations the means of expanding new scientific and industrial revolutions. Conventional space stations in near-earth orbit already benefit from low gravity conditions, access to the vacuum of space and other extraterrestrial resources. Future space colonists would have these advantages, as well as ready access to unlimited amounts of solar energy, which could cheaply power space factories manufacturing products for the people of earth. And these interstellar factories would minimize the earth's problems of pollution and radioactive waste. If such things come to pass, mail indeed may one day be whisked via space shuttle to faraway addresses where postal workers would no longer have to cope with the rain, snow, sleet and hail of earth. Their deliveries in outer space would be complicated by weightlessness and the lack of a breathable atmosphere. Dressed in spacesuits, equipped with bulky but so very important oxygen packs, space-age postal deliverers would endeavor to complete their extraterrestrial rounds while facing conditions never imagined by earthbound mailmen. SIGHT SIZE: 21 x 10 inches / 53 x 25 cm BOARD SIZE: 23 x 15 inches / 58 x 38 cm SIGNATURE: lower right NOTE: This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the 32c Equestrian Classic Collection Series stamp issued May 2, 1996. The first Equestrian Olympic Competition was held at the Paris Games of 1900. Accomplished horsemen and their superbly-trained mounts competed in high jump, long jump and individual dressage events. As in all Olympic sports, riding has its great champions -- those who have mastered the correct combination of flexibility, dexterity and control that equestrian events demand. Successful horsemanship requires the rider to establish a genuine partnership with his mount, demonstrating a fine balance of firmness and gentleness in controlling the horse. The skills mastered by the Olympic equestrian are not soon diminished, and talented champions have returned to the games for repeat performances. The grueling three-day Olympic event begins with a dressage competition followed by an endurance test and ends with show-jumping. Equestrian competition in the Olympic Games is a dignified, regal and athletically demanding contest deservedly entitled the Sport of Kings. PROVENANCE: Collection of James A. NOTE: This painting was originally published on the Federated States of Micronesia 50c Orangestriped Triggerfish Native Fish stamp issued May 14, 1993. Some of the world's most colorful and eye-catching fish are found in Micronesian waters. The Bennett's Butterflyfish is among the most striking in coloration. Characterized by a brilliant yellow body with a distinctive black spot rimmed in white, it takes on a more somber pattern during evening hours while feeding on coral polyps at the ocean bottom. The handsome Orangestriped Triggerfish shares this appetite for polyps and can effortlessly nip off brittle pieces of coral with its powerful teeth and jaws. When this fish is disturbed, the first of its three stout spines on the dorsal fin locks upright and can be dropped only when the second smaller "trigger" spine, which fits into a groove behind the first, is depressed. Another sea creature common to Micronesia is the Regal Angelfish. The male of this species will tirelessly defend its territory, which often includes a "harem" of two to five females. Most Moray eels are also considered highly defensive. However, the distinctive Zebra Moray, despite its snake-like appearance, is surprisingly docile and shy.

NOTE: This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the 32c Winfield Hancock Classic Collection Series stamp issued June 29, 1995. Winfield Scott Hancock was born at Montgomery Square, Pennsylvania, on February 14, 1824. He graduated from West Point in 1844 and served in the Mexican War, in Florida, in Kansas during the border struggles, and in Utah. When the Civil War broke out, he was commissioned a brigadier general in the Union Army in September of 1861 and fought in the Peninsular Campaign. At the Battle of Antietam, on September 17, 1862, Hancock was given command of a division and soon earned a reputation as an inspiring leader. In December of that year, at the Battle of Fredericksburg, his men courageously attacked Marye's Heights, suffering over 40-percent casualties. But it was at Gettysburg that he had his greatest moment. On July 1, 1863, as Union and Confederate troops converged there, Hancock was directed by General George G. Meade to take command of all Federal troops and report his opinion of Gettysburg as an appropriate site for a battle. Hancock's arrival on the field inspired Union troops. On the third day of battle, although Hancock was severely wounded, his men turned back General George Pickett's gallant charge at Cemetery Ridge. Hancock recovered from his wound and after the war he commanded the military districts of Louisiana and Texas. When his wise policies of moderation were criticized by radicals in Congress, he was assigned at his own request to command the Division of the Atlantic. In 1880, Hancock was nominated as the Democratic candidate for president, but lost the election to James Garfield. ART SIZE: 7 x 6 inches / 17 x 15 cm PAPER SIZE: 14 x 12 inches / 35 x 30 cm SIGNATURE: lower right NOTE: This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of The Gambia 25th Anniversary of the Moon Landing stamps issued August 16, 1994. Although originally scheduled to take off on May 14, 1963, Mercury 9 experienced radar malfunctions and an engine problem that delayed its launch until the following day. On May 15, Air Force Major General Gordon Cooper manned his spacecraft, which he called Faith 7. Its liftoff was as flawless as that of Wally Schirra's Sigma 7 just seven months earlier. Once Cooper was in orbit, he marveled at the detail he could make out from such a vantage point. He later recalled seeing the wake of a boat on the Nile as well as tendrils of smoke from villages in the Himalayas. Thrilling scenes such as those, combined with his floating, weightless arms, kept Cooper from getting the full seven and a half hours scheduled for his rest. Yet this was the least of his problems. During Faith 7's 19th orbit, an indicator light warned that "G" forces were building early. Two revolutions later, it was determined that the spacecraft's automatic stabilization and control system had lost all power. Later Cooper revealed, "I was privately pleased. I was glad for this chance to do the job myself and I was certain by now that I really had the thing nailed." His confident approach proved successful. Nearly 34 hours after its liftoff and following 22 orbits of Earth, Faith 7 safely landed four miles from its target, marking the final mission of the Mercury Project and taking man another step closer to the Moon. Founded by William Penn in 1682, Philadelphia soon became a center of religious freedom -- hence its nickname, "The City of Brotherly Love." It also soon became a major hub of colonial American politics, serving as home to the Second Continental Congress that adopted the Declaration of Independence, as well as the convention that passed the Bill of Rights. In time, the city played a vital role in the American Industrial Revolution, and because of its highly developed industry was a crucial supplier for Union forces during the Civil War. Philadelphia is a city of many "firsts." Among these, Philadelphia had the first library, the first hospital, and the first American learned society. Today, it is the fourth largest city in the United States -- yet remains famous for its "small-town" atmosphere. Whether walking through Fairmount Park or listening to the music of the renowned Philadelphia Orchestra, one can easily appreciate this city's beauty. PROVENANCE: Collection of James A.

SIGHT SIZE: 10 x 12 inches / 25 x 30 cm BOARD SIZE: 16 x 23 inches / 40 x 58 cm SIGNATURE: lower right NOTE: This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Maximum Card for the U.S. 25c Grand Canyon Panorama stamp issued October 12, 1990. The American West is a land of canyons, a country sliced, chopped and incised with deep, spectacular gorges. Many of these have achieved fame for their beauty: the Royal Gorge of the Arkansas, the gorges of the Snake and the Columbia, the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. But no canyon is so famous, so singular in its immensity, or so intricate as the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River. The cutting, mighty Colorado has exposed the layers of time like an open book; North America's most spectacular canyon is also the continent's greatest geologic wonder. The inner gorge of the canyon dates from four billion years ago, with layer upon layer of history rising from the depths. Geologists feel that some of the volcanic rock and ash at the very rim of the canyon may be as little as one thousand years old -- a veritable babe in the sense of geologic time. It was into this great abyss that the first European, Garcia Lopez de Cardenas, gazed in awe in 1540. A member of Francisco Coronado's expedition in search of the Seven Golden Cities of Cibola, Cardenas made a side foray to the canyon in what is now Arizona. Millions since have experienced the wonders of the Grand Canyon, made a National Park in 1919. Because of this status, the canyon is much today as it was hundreds of years ago and this stamp, part of the America series, depicts its unchanged grandeur. The Colorado still cuts slowly down through the skin of the earth and eagles still soar high in the air over this great canyon. PROVENANCE: Collection of James A. "Yesterday, December 7, 1941 -- a date which will live in infamy -- the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan." With these immortal words, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt appeared before a joint session of Congress on December 8, 1941. In a pointed, moving speech, Roosevelt, drawn and haggard from a night with little sleep, continued: "I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, December 7, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese Empire." Only thirty-three minutes later, Congress passed a declaration of war with Japan. That same day, a resolute FDR signed the declaration and America entered the Second World War. Surprisingly, Roosevelt's words were a little different in the first draft of the Congress message. After the initial draft, the words ".. a date which will live in world history" were changed to the famous and more powerful ".. a date which will live in infamy. Regardless, the effect of the attack and Roosevelt's speech was unforgettable: Recruiting stations were packed with men wishing to enter the Armed Forces and angry cries for revenge swept across the country. From that day forward, Americans would not rest in their drive to free the world. PROVENANCE: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. Son of a Spanish sea captain, adopted at age eight by a U.S. naval officer, battling the British aboard the frigate Essex at age 12, David Glasgow Farragut would later fight pirates in the West Indies and take part in the war with Mexico. A resident of Norfolk, Virginia, Farragut moved his family north the same day Virginia seceded from the Union. With the outbreak of the Civil War, Union strategy was to isolate the Confederacy by blockade and by seizing the Mississippi River. Farragut was selected to head the Southern expedition to capture New Orleans by naval attack. In April of 1862, after a furious battle against Forts Jackson and St. Philip on the Mississippi, New Orleans surrendered. Farragut became the first man in the U.S. Navy to be promoted to rear admiral. He soon won the nickname of "Old Salamander" by running his ships repeatedly under heavy gunfire. On August 5, 1864, during the Battle of Mobile Bay, Farragut set out to capture the Confederate ironclad Tennessee with four ironclad monitors and 14 wooden ships. When one Union ship was sunk by a submerged torpedo, the others stopped in alarm. A monumental pile-up might have resulted, but Farragut, in the Hartford, made one of his famous quick decisions. "Damn the torpedoes," he shouted, "Full speed ahead!" The Hartford then maneuvered through the minefield without incident. After a violent engagement, the Tennessee was forced to surrender. Congress later created the ranks of vice admiral, and then admiral, for Farragut. PROVENANCE: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. Angelfish are very similar in appearance to butterflyfish, and at one time were classified in the same family. Both have a deep, compressed body, a small mouth with brushlike teeth, and a single, unnotched dorsal fin. They also display striking patterns of spectacular color. An inhabitant of the rich coral growth of clear lagoon and seaward reefs, the Flame Angelfish is identified by its flame-orange body with contrasting stripes and brilliant blue-tipped dorsal and anal fins. Easily startled, it prefers to stay near a sheltered area. A regular export from Majuro, the Flame Angelfish thrives in captivity as an aquarium fish, if given a sunlit tank with ample algal growth. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Federated States of Micronesia Yellow-Fin Tuna stamp issued August 4, 1995. Chris Calle's painting of the Yellow-fin Tuna is one of a set of four of the beautiful native fish of Micronesia. For centuries, Micronesians have thrived on a variety of food fish harvested from the waters surrounding their home islands. Today, commerical fishing companies have also tapped into the region's abundance of aquatic life. One of the most popular fish caught by such operations is the Skipjack Tuna. Particularly prevalent in the Pacific, these creatures are known to grow very rapidly. However, their life expectancy is only about four years. The Yellow-fin, another variety of tuna, has a reputation as one of the most tenacious game fish. Once it takes the bait, this fish fights the angler every step of the way. The Cave Grouper, on the other hand, is relatively secretive. It inhabits caves and crevices such as those found in Micronesia's steep outer reef slopes. Known to be a loner, the Cave Grouper typically travels singly or sometimes in small groups. A more gregarious resident of Pacific waters is the Bluelined Snapper. This fish occurs in large gatherings, particularly around prominent coral formations, isolated reefs and wrecks. Because this snapper feeds at night, it is among the most popular catches of sportsmen who fish during the evening hours. Image Size: 13 x 15.25 in. Overall Size: 14.5 x 22 in. Unframed. (B15148)

Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the Republic of Palau 25th Anniversary of the Moon Landing stamps issued July 20, 1994. Twice before it was scheduled to be launched, Gemini 9 was postponed. But the delays were the least of the difficulties faced by astronauts Thomas Stafford and Eugene Cernan during the mission. Originally, Gemini 9 was intended to dock with a previously launched target called an ATDA (for Augmented Target Docking Adapter). However, that target had evolved into what Cernan described as an "angry alligator." The intriguing description resulted from the failure of the ATDA to shed its nose shroud. The off-kilter device looked to the astronauts like a long-nosed, open-jawed reptile. While their initial mission was scrubbed, the astronauts still had another goal in mind: an extended space walk by Cernan three days after the launch. Though the extravehicular activity, as it was called, was intended to last for nearly three hours, Cernan experienced immediate problems with his space suit and jet-powered backpack. The backpack proved too cumbersome to don easily, and caused Cernan to break into a sweat that fogged his faceplate. Just as he managed to finally put on the backpack, Mission Control ordered him back inside the Gemini capsule. Despite that, Cernan's space walk was a record-setting two hours and eight minutes long. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the Dominica 25th Anniversary of the Moon Landing stamps issued July 26, 1994. Loaded with record amounts of fuel and supplies, Gemini 7 was the heaviest spacecraft yet to be launched by the United States when it lifted off on December 4, 1965. The extra provisions would be necessary if command pilot Frank Borman and co-pilot James Lovell were to set a new world endurance mark by orbiting the Earth for two weeks. But breaking records was just one objective NASA had in mind for Gemini 7. Some five weeks earlier, on October 25, Gemini 6 had been left at the launch pad because the Atlas-Agena rocket it was to rendezvous with had failed, breaking up before reaching orbit. With no target vehicle available, the Gemini 6 mission was put on hold indefinitely. However, NASA now had Gemini 7 in orbit and decided that it could act as a target for Gemini 6. So on the morning of December 15, astronauts Walter Schirra and Thomas P. Stafford were launched into orbit aboard Gemini 6. Just six hours after liftoff, the two spacecraft were less than two miles apart. Fifteen minutes after that, they were within 20 feet of each other. Photographs later revealed that the two spacecraft had come as close as two or three feet. The rendezvous was an amazing success. Gemini 6 splashed down the next day. Borman and Lovell completed their two-week mission aboard Gemini 7, splashing down on December 18, holders of a new world record for time spent in space. Image Size: 7 x 6.25 in. America's beloved national emblem, the eagle has appeared as a featured decorative ornament in American folk art almost since the birth of the nation. This popular symbol is seen on such diverse items as wallpaper, musical instruments, pottery, glassware, china, cookie jars, playing cards, canes, bookends, posters, picture frames, whiskey bottles, ship figureheads and flags. During the Revolutionary War, General George Washington chose the eagle as the motif for the buttons on his uniform. In 1782, it became the central figure of America's Great Seal and, in 1789 when Washington was inaugurated the first President of the United States in New York City, he proudly stood beneath a magnificent eagle that adorned the pediment of Federal Hall. The eagle first appeared on American coinage when New Jersey issued a copper coin in 1786. Silver dollars, half dollars and dimes displaying the eagle entered circulation in 1794. The nation's first gold coins were minted in 1795, and were known as eagles and half eagles -- ten and five dollar pieces respectively. Many 19th century American coins featured an eagle in flight or perched upon a branch or rock. Other designs portrayed the eagle in a heraldic pose with a ribbon or banner held in its beak. Eagles are also a popular design for weather vanes made from sheet copper, brass or tin. Eagles were featured motifs in fabrics, beautifully stitched into quilts, draperies and rugs -- often elaborately ornamented with stars, flowers, sun rays, trees and houses.
