Alexander (1898) Calder Sold at Auction Prices

Sculptor, b. 1898 - d. 1976

Born in 1898, Alexander Calder became one of the most influential sculptors in American art. After earning a degree in engineering, he turned to art, and Alexander Calder’s drawings debuted in the National Police Gazette a few years later. An assignment to sketch the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus produced a lifelong interest in the circus, resulting in Cirque Calder, one of the first examples of Alexander Calder’s abstract art made with wire and found objects.

Alexander Calder’s drawings were often abstract, and many resemble his three-dimensional mobiles crafted with wires and brightly colored shapes. In addition to his mobiles, Alexander Calder sculptures are for sale throughout the world. His sculpture La Grande Vitesse sits in the downtown center of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and is the unofficial symbol of the city.  Expand your vision with unique abstract prints for sale online and at auction.

Artist: Alexander Calder (1898-1976) Title: "Skywirl" (from the Braniff International Airways Flying Colors Collection) Year: 1974-75 Medium: Lithographs on Arches paper Size: 20 x 26 inches Condition: Excellent Edition: 3,000, plus proofs Inscription: Each artwork signed and dated in the lithographic plate as published, embossed with Flying Colors Collection blindstamp lower right. ABOUT THE FLYING COLORS COLLECTION: In 1972, Dallas based Braniff International Airways commissioned Alexander Calder to paint a full-size Douglas DC-8-62 airliner, dubbed a “flying canvas.” Models of the aircraft were sent to Calder at his studio in France in November of 1972, and work commenced. Braniff announced the Calder collaboration to the public on June 4, 1973. It was the first time in aviation history that an seminal fine artist had ever painted a aircraft to be used in regular airline service. Painting occurred at the carrier’s Dallas Love Field Operations and Maintenance Base. Calder also supervised the painting of the aircraft at the Braniff Base, and personally painted the two left side engine nacelles with two of his designs called “Beastie” and “Sunburst”. While at the hangar Calder befriended many of the Braniff Maintenance and Engineering personnel and even painted his unique designs on their lunch pails and toolboxes. At the time, some of the employees did not like the designs but quickly changed their mind once they realized they became owners of their own original Calder artworks. The following original lithographs comprise the Braniff International Airways “Flying Colors Collection” that was created by Calder and Braniff to commemorate their historic collaboration. ALEXANDER CALDER (1898-1976) Credited with the invention of the mobile, Alexander Calder revolutionized twentieth-century art with his innovative use of subtle air currents to animate sculpture. Calder was prolific and worked throughout his career in many art forms. An accomplished painter of gouaches and sculptor in a variety of media, Calder is best known for poetic arrangements of boldly colored, irregularly shaped geometric forms that convey a sense of harmony and balance. He also designed jewelry, tapestry, theater settings and architectural interiors. CALDER ALEXANDER (1898 - 1976). RÃ. signature and date at the back: title The work is registered with the Calder Foundation, New York, under n. A12903 PROVENANCE Private collection, Como Painted in 1972, the work we present is a vivid example of Alexander Calder's gouaches. Calder, known for his kinetic sculptures, began in 1953 to create a series of gouaches to explore his ideas in two dimensions using mainly graphic lines and primary colors, depicting Euclidean and figurative forms. In the work we present, the bright red sun, which recalls the Egyptian divinity Rã, illuminates the scene entirely. The sun represents a fundamental image in Calder's ideology. In 1922 while working in the boiler room of the steamship H.F. Alexander, on a journey from New York to San Francisco, via the Panama Canal, had witnessed a visionary spectacle. The artist tried to make art of that moment, which is why the sun will often feature, as a constant, in his production. 'It was early one morning on a calm sea, off Guatemala,' he remembered, 'when over my couch—a coil of rope—I saw the beginning of a fiery red sunrise on one side and the moon looking like a silver coin on the other. Of the whole trip this impressed me most of all; it left me with a lasting sensation of the solar system' (A. Calder, Calder: An Autobiography with Pictures, ed. Jean Davidson, New York 1966, pp. 53-55).. 109,80 x 74,80 cm. 1972.

Notes: Published by Braniff International Airways, Dallas, TX. printed at Atelier Fernand Mourlot, Paris. From the 1940s on, Calder's works, many of them large-scale outdoor sculptures, have been placed in virtually every major city of the Western world. Condition Excellent Buyer's Premium 25%
