      Eaton's. 1930.

      Est: $1,700 - $2,000

ARTIST: LOUIS CAILLAUD SIZE: 31 x 47 in./78.8 x 119.5 cm PRINTER: Tolmer, Paris DESCRIPTION: Much like Dupas' designs for department stores, Caillaud takes a highly stylized and modeled approach—quite literally—as three fashionable muses flock around a marble sculpture. But this Parisian image, created by a French designer and printed in Paris, is advertising the Canadian department store Eaton's, which is akin to Macy's. It's likely the promotion was meant for an expansion into the European market. And what an elegant attempt it is. (Art Deco; Fashion)

LOUIS CAILLAUD (1894-1960). EATON'S PRESENTS THE SPRING FASHIONS. 1930. 47x30 inches, 119x78 cm. Tolmer, Paris.

      Est: $1,500 - $2,000

LOUIS CAILLAUD (1894-1960) EATON'S PRESENTS THE SPRING FASHIONS. 1930. 47x30 3/4 inches, 119 1/2x78 cm. Tolmer, Paris. Condition A-: minor creases in margins; smaller water stains at bottom right edge; unobtrusive foxing spots in image. Eaton's (officially T. Eaton Company Ltd.) was Canada's largest chain of department stores and a beloved national institution. Founded in 1869, the company was that country's first to use a mail-order catalogue, which first appeared in 1884. Although they didn't have stores in France, they did have a buying office in Paris through which they likely commissioned this poster. Caillaud was primarily a fashion photographer, but also had a simple, direct Art Deco sensibility similar to the works of illustrators whose work appeared in La Gazette du Bon Ton. La Femme 207.
