Fidelma Cadmus (1906-1991) was Paul Cadmus' (1904-1999, see lots 123-126) sister and an accomplished artist herself. In 1941, she married Lincoln Kirstein (1907-1996), the New York writer, impresario, art connoisseur, philanthropist and cultural figure, perhaps best known as the co-founder of the New York City Ballet and the company's general director from 1946 to 1989. Following her marriage to Kirstein, she gradually withdrew from painting and drawing, the stress of her relationship with Kirstein, who was bisexual and had numerous affairs with other men throughout their marriage, leading to sometimes debilitating physchological breakdowns.
