Measurements: 65 x 51 cm; 80 x 65,5 cm (frame). The brushstroke, very careful, reflects a great amount of details. The light does not show a very powerful spotlight, providing a soft and harmonious atmosphere to the whole work, in which the characters also show a somewhat restrained movement. These are characteristics typical of the artist, in addition to the genre scenes which were very much to the taste of Manuel Cabral, who immortalised numerous pilgrimages and processions such as the one shown in this work or the one dedicated to Corpus Christi in Seville, a painting which belongs to the Prado Museum collection. Manuel Cabral y Aguado Bejarano trained first with his father, the painter Antonio Cabral Bejarano, and later at the Academy of Fine Arts of Santa Isabel de Hungría in his native city, where he eventually became a professor and academician. Throughout his career he took part in numerous official exhibitions, including the National Fine Arts Exhibitions in Madrid in 1858, 1860 and 1867, in which he received honourable mentions. He was even appointed honorary painter to Queen Isabella II. Although he is chiefly known for his Andalusian costumbrista works, and in fact one of the best representatives of Andalusian costumbrismo within Spanish Romanticism, Cabral also produced history, religious and portrait paintings. His scenes of processions and pilgrimages, always of a costumbrista nature, achieved great success both in the Andalusian capital and in Madrid. Cabral sought revelry and drama, but he also provided typical testimonies, reinforced by detailed views of costumes, poses and buildings. Examples of his extensive oeuvre include "El Corpus en Sevilla", "Galanteo", "En la Feria de Sevilla" and "Fiesta en el cortijo", among a long list that also includes a large number of portraits. He is currently represented in the Prado Museum, the National Museum in Havana, the Reales Alcázares in Seville, the Romantic Museum in Madrid, the Academy of Fine Arts, the Seville Town Hall and University Library and the Museum of Fine Arts in Cadiz.

Firmado y fechado en 1871. Hijo del pintor Antonio Cabral Bejarano, Manuel Cabral fue nombrado Pintor Honorario de Cmara por Isabel II. Igual que su padre, que realiz pinturas decorativas para el palacio de San Telmo, estuvo muy vinculado a los Duques de Monpensier, y retrat a distintos miembros de la familia. La retratada, la infanta Maria Cristina, fu la tercera hija de Antonio de Orleans y Luisa Fernanda de Borbn. Cuando muri su hermana Maria de las Mercedes, Alfonso XII consider la posibilidad de contraer matrimonio con ella, sin embargo, su prematura muerte en abril de 1879 trunc el proyecto, y el rey se cas con Maria Cristina de Habsburgo en noviembre de ese mismo ao. La joven retratada contaria en 1871, 19 aos deedad. Posa en un banco de piedra en un jardin, al fondo, laGiralda y la Catedral. Viste indumentaria castiza, con peina y mantilla de blonda, mantn de manila, falda de madroos y en las manos un abanico. A sus pies, un perrillo de compaa, otorga al retrato un caracter de intimidad y cercana.
