Original printed yellow wrappers, in red cloth chemise and slipcase. Light wear to wrappers, thumbed, chemise damaged at corners. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE.WITH: Another copy. London: Bernard Quaritch, 1880. 4to (204 x 274 mm). Original printed yellow wrappers, in brown cloth folder and gilt titled brown calf slipcase. Slight chipping to spine, a few marks on wrappers, creases to top right corners, internally very clean. FIRST EDITION, SECOND ISSUE.Provenance: Harold Greenhill (1893-1968, bookplate).A distillation of Sufi thought generally considered to be written by, rather than translated by, Burton. Penzer speculates that the entire first edition, first and second issues, did not exceed 200 copies. Penzer pp 97-98.

Wrappers partially detached, spine somewhat darkened, minor crease to one corner of upper wrapper, overall a clean, attractive copy, slipcase with shelfwear. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE of this distillation of Sufi thought generally considered to be written by, rather than translated by, Burton. Penzer speculates that the entire first edition, first and second issues, did not exceed 200 copies. Penzer pp 97-8.

Marston, Low, and Searle, 1876. 2 volumes, 8υo (221 x 138 mm). 4 wood-engraved plates, 2 folding lithographic maps printed in blue and black, wood-engraved illustrations. (Occasional thumb-soiling.) Original green cloth blocked in black with gilt vignettes on upper cover and spine, gilt spine lettering, dark brown endpapers (covers slightly soiled, one corner bumped). Provenance: M.C. Carter Blake (ownership label on front pastedowns); H.M. Stanley (sold by his descendants, Christie's London, 24 September 2002, lot 153). FIRST EDITION. With 2 pages of pencil notes in an unidentified hand, possibly Carter Blake's, loosely inserted between pp. 154-155 of vol. II. The notes are evidently by someone familiar with the region, referring to the geography of the Gaboon river, the Western Ghats, "the Ghats E & W," the Ogobe, and "the lofty Fernando Po (9350 ft.)." Also to diet and the necessity for alcohol as a medicine, ending with approval of Burton's "Grand general view of the African Continent vol. II: 154." Hosken p. 34; Penzer p. 94. (2)
