        Nov. 20, 2024

Thomas Buttersworth,  British 1768-1842-  The Bombardment of Algiers;  oils on canvas, one signed

        Est: £3,000 - £5,000

Thomas Buttersworth,  British 1768-1842-  The Bombardment of Algiers;  oils on canvas, one signed 'T. Buttersworth Sr[?]' (lower right), each 46 x 61.5 cm., a pair (2). (VAT charged with the hammer price).  Note:  Buttersworth served in the Royal Navy in the 1790s before becoming a marine painter, with his compositions obviously informed by his experience as a seaman. He produced a number of versions of the present highly dramatic scene, which depicts the 'Bombardment of Algiers' of 27 August 1816, in which the British and Netherlandish forces attempted to break the power of the 'Barbary pirates' who had been active in the area. Indeed, another strikingly similar version of the same composition sold at Christie's, London, on 3 December 2015 (lot 159) for £17,000, while another, larger, scene sold at Bonhams, London, on 28 February 2006 (lot 83) for £46,000.

Thomas Buttersworth (British, 1768-1842) Burning of the USS Philadelphia oil on canvas signed T. Buttersworth, lower left 22 x 33 1/2 inches. Exhibition History: 10th Anniversary Spoleto Exhibition, Gibbes Museum of Art, Charleston, South Carolina, 1986. Previously captured by Tripolitans, the USS Philadelphia, a thirty-six-gun frigate built in 1799, was notoriously set ablaze in an American-led raid. England's Lord Nelson purportedly called this scorched-earth tactic "the most bold and daring act of the age." On February 16, 1804, Lieutenant Stephen Decatur (1779-1820) entered the Bay of Tripoli with a band of volunteer raiders aboard the ketch Intrepid. The Intrepid spuriously flew British colors as a merchant vessel, and the crew pretended that they had lost their anchors in a storm. Granted permission to anchor in the harbor, Decatur and his party boarded the Philadelphia under the cover of the night and set fire to the vessel, lest the Tripolitans repurpose her for piracy.

THOMAS BUTTERSWORTH (1768-1842) - THE SPANISH PRIZES AT THE BATTLE OF CAPE ST. VINCENT, 1797 THOMAS BUTTERSWORTH (1768-1842) The Spanish prizes taken at the Battle of Cape St. Vincent, 1797 Signed and dated 'T Buttersworth 97' (lower left) Pen and grey ink and watercolour 15 x 20in. (38 x 50.8cm.) Christie's South Kensington, Maritime, 11 November 1999, lot 355. Exhibited: Sotheby's, Rule Britannia, 1986, p. 78, no. 92. The battle fought off Cape St. Vincent (southern Portugal) on 14th February 1797 was not only a notable victory for the British fleet under the command of Admiral Sir John Jervis, but also the first naval engagement to bring Horatio Nelson to public attention. His considerable daring, in throwing his ship H.M.S. Captain across the path of the leading Spanish men-o'war, came at a critical moment and enabled Jervis to close up and bring the full weight of his guns upon the enemy. It was a brilliant ploy by Nelson and resulted in a shattering defeat for Spain made worse by the capture, as prizes-of-war, of four of her best vessels, San Josef and Salvador del Mundo, both 112 guns, San Nicholas - 80 guns, and San Ysidro - 74 guns. Time stained. Needs cleaning.

DESCRIPTION: Attributed Thomas Buttersworth (British, 1768–1842) "The Gale of Plymouth" Oil on Canvas. Features a rendering of a large ship sailing through rough seas with smaller boats seen off in the distance. Signed lower right and dated on the back "Thomas Buttersworth "The Gale of Plymouth" November 23 1824" Thomas Buttersworth (British, 1768–1842) was born on the Isle of Wight, and joined the Royal Navy in London in 1780. He began his painting career while at sea, and the accuracy of many of his late 18th-century Mediterranean subjects, and his paintings of the Battle of St. Vincent and the Blockade of Cadiz, would indicate that they were painted on location. On his return to England, he established himself as a painter of marine scenes, executing ship portraits of larger naval and merchant vessels and important naval engagements. These included his famous Battle of Trafalgar, which was exhibited at the British Institution in 1825, and is now a part of the National Maritime Museum collection in Greenwich. He exhibited only one painting each at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, and Suffolk Street, but he was a prolific artist whose works were and still are very popular with collectors.
