The current example shows the Sainte-Radegonde Catholic Church in Giverny. Originally constructed in the 11th century and rebuilt in the 16th century, it sits on a hillside and was a popular subject for the American Impressionists, including Theodore Robinson (Old Church at Giverny, 1891, Smithsonian American Art Museum), Theodore Wendel (Flowering Fields, Giverny, 1889, Terra Foundation for American Art), and Dawson Dawson-Watson (Giverny: Road Looking West toward Church, circa 1890, Terra Foundation for American Art), as well as Butler. He and Suzanne Hoschedé were married at the Church, as commemorated in Robinson’s The Wedding March (1892, Terra Foundation for American Art). Claude Monet is buried in its graveyard. In Church, Giverny, the lush landscape and sky are awash in bright sunlight while the painterly and engaging impasto distributed across the paint surface demonstrates Butler’s enormous admiration for Monet’s Impressionist technique. The reverse bears the stamp of Parisian canvas maker Paul Foinet, whose canvases were sold at the Ancien Hotel Baudy, a small guest house and café in Giverny frequented by many artists.

In the fall of 1899, Theodore Butler left France for New York with his children, Lilly and Jimmy, and his sister-in-law, Marthe Hoschedé. His wife, Suzanne Hoschedé, who was also Claude Monet’s stepdaughter, had died earlier the same year. Butler had settled in Giverny in the 1880s along with other American expatriate artists who were drawn by Monet’s influence, but he left for the United States to be closer to his family after Suzanne’s death. The drastic change between the bucolic landscape of Giverny and the dramatic hustle and bustle of New York clearly inspired the artist. Butler lived in New York before leaving for Europe, and the city changed greatly in the intervening time. He was only to stay for six months, but during that time he produced some of his most acclaimed artworks, including East River, 1899. In the present painting, Butler depicts a southwest view of the lower Manhattan skyline, possibly from the Brooklyn Bridge or Fulton Street Ferry Landing. The tall building in the center of the composition is most likely the American Surety Building (1896, extant) with the steeple of Trinity Church (1839-46, extant) immediately to the left. Other identifiable buildings include the Commercial Cable Building (1897-1950s) and Manhattan Life Insurance Building (1894-circa 1964). On the far left is the St. Paul Building (1898-1958), with the American Tract Society Building (1894-96, extant) on the right side of the composition. Although composed of iridescent blues, pinks, and purples that masterfully convey the cold, moist air, East River also shows the harbor as a busy center of industry. The lower half of the large canvas depicts a lone sailing ship and numerous tugboats and ferries steamboats coming in and out of the docks of the East River, with the cityscape towering above. The line of steamboats divides the composition in half, with their rolling smoke clouds floating up to soften the angular grid of the Manhattan skyscrapers. Butler used a variety of brushwork, with smoother strokes for the water, smoke, and clouds, and stronger, diagonal strokes for the ships, harbor, and skyline. The effect dissolves all shapes in space uniformly, creating a filmy, chromatic atmosphere that shimmers and flickers across the luminous canvas. It offers the viewer an incredible rendering of the East River, a poetic homage to its industrialization. East River was possibly included in a March 1900 exhibition at the New York location of Galerie Durand-Ruel, along with works by the artist's father-in-law, Monet. Three paintings in the exhibition were titled East River and at least one bore the title Brooklyn Bridge. These views of New York were done in Butler’s particular combination of impressionist colors and brushwork with post-impressionist abstract, flattened forms and patterning. More accustomed to Monet’s brand of impressionism, critics’ responses to Butler’s work were mixed. However, the uniqueness of his imagery did not go unnoticed. In a letter to his friend, the artist Philip Leslie Hale, Butler stated that “Papa Durand-Ruel bought one of my New York pictures. That sounds quite simple but means a lot to me.” Likewise, a critic of the International Studio emphasized that the artist “goes to the extreme of vividness” and shows an “intensely penetrating vision” (“American Studio Talk,” International Studio, 10, no. 37 (March 1900), p. IV). In the present work, Butler captures the classic essence of New York, a city that restlessly vibrates with life.

Long meaningful to Butler, paintings of the region allowed a unique opportunity to examine his artistic development as he entered his post-impressionist period. Veules-les-Roses was a charming coastal village that held significant allure for artists in the late 19th and early 20th centuries due to its picturesque landscapes and quaint seaside settings. It was during this time that numerous artists, including Claude Monet, discovered the serene beauty of this coastal gem and immortalized its essence on canvas. However, before 1900, most of Butler’s landscapes depict the region surrounding Giverny, a picturesque town northwest of Paris. An American artist hailing from Columbus, Ohio, Butler first journeyed to Giverny in 1888 to join the American impressionist community that had settled in the village to be within Claude Monet’s orbit. While there, Butler met Suzanne Hoschedé, Monet’s stepdaughter, who he would marry in 1892. Suzanne unfortunately died of a lingering illness in 1899, leaving behind Theodore and their two children, Jimmy, and Lilly. After a brief visit to America, the artist returned to France with his children and began to look beyond the rolling fields and bucolic gardens of Giverny for new inspiration. Butler first visited the coast of Normandy in the summer of 1904. He traveled there with fellow artist Philip Leslie Hale and his family to Quiberville, a small resort village along the northern French coast. Butler continued to make annual summer visits to the area with his family to paint scenes of the seashore and its environs, often renting a house in Veules-les-Roses with Guy Rose, an American painter, and his wife Ethel. He would continue to explore the region, visiting multiple locations in the summer of 1906, including Tréport, Dieppe, Trépied, Honfleur, as well as Veules-les-Roses, the location of the present canvas. In many of the artworks that he produced along the Normandy coast, Butler took advantage of the effects of sunlight and atmosphere and used color as he saw fit to better express himself dynamically. At Veules-les-Roses, the artist spent time at the Chalet Rouge, where he created a series of paintings capturing the essence of the area’s landscapes. The Chalet Rouge, with its elevated vantage point, offered a stunning view of the coastline and it was from here that Butler executed Coucher de soleil à Veules-les-Roses, 1909. In the painting, the flags that circle the beach cabin are stirred by the wind and introduce a lively aspect to the scene. Their movement against the backdrop of the sunset generates a striking visual contrast that encapsulates a fleeting moment where nature’s forces converge and interact. The sparkling sea, which dominates much of the composition, is depicted with energetic, yet elegantly discrete brushstrokes of green, yellow, and pink laid against a wash of blues and purples. Despite the square format of the painting, a verticality is created by the glowing pink sun set high in the upper register of the sky. Its rays cast a golden path through the center of the water to the small patch of beach along the lower edge. Staccato white paint strokes abstractly indicate the waves as they break along the sandy shore. With its energy-charged brushwork, vivid and highly saturated color, and boldly executed composition, Coucher de soleil à Veules-les-Roses stands as an exemplary illustration of Butler’s best post-impressionist work.

Size: 60 x 50 cm; 79 x 69 cm (frame). After his first marriage and the birth of his children, Butler concentrated especially on domestic subjects, painted indoors or in his garden. Butler's brushwork displays qualities that align him with the work of Paul Gauguin and the Nabi artists. In his later work, Butler experimented further with Fauve principles, painting landscapes in Giverny and on the Normandy coast, and sometimes applying colour directly from the tube to the decorative ends. Theodore Earl Butler) was an American Impressionist painter, who moved to Paris to study art. He befriended Claude Monet in Giverny and married his stepdaughter, Suzanne Hoschedé. After her death, he married her sister, Marthe Hoschedé. Butler was a founding member of the Society of Independent Artists. Butler's chosen subjects were domestic scenes of family and friends and the French landscape. Although his Impressionist approach to painting sometimes reflects the influence of his father-in-law, his work also suggests Post-Impressionist tendencies. Butler studied at Marietta College in Ohio and graduated in 1882. He studied at the Art Students League with James Carroll Beckwith, Kenyon Cox and J. Alden Weir, and with William Merritt Chase from 1884 to 1886. In Paris, Butler enrolled at La Grande-Chaumière, the Académie Colarossi and the Académie Julian. Butler studied with Emile Carolus Duran. Carolus opened an art studio in 1873 on the Boulevard Montparnasse, called "81". Carolus, who was also known to have given free private lessons to some painters, introduced his pupils to the work of Claude Monet. Monet had moved to Giverny on 29 April 1883. Butler received an honourable mention in 1888 at the Paris Salon for a painting entitled "La Veuve" (The Widow). Besides him, other American painters who spent time at Giverny were John Leslie Breck, Frederick Carl Frieseke, Edmund Greacen, Philip Leslie Hale, Willard Metcalf, Lilla Cabot Perry, Theodore Robinson and Guy Rose. An exhibition of foreign artists, including Butler, Meteyard, Fox, Dice, Dice, Stasburg and Dawson Watson, was held from 31 January 1892 to February 1892. Butler became a key figure and a link between the American colony and Claude Monet. Butler developed his own Impressionist style with clear palettes and loose brushstrokes, reminiscent of the works of Édouard Vuillard and Pierre Bonnard. From his garden he painted landscapes showing the church of Giverny, the Demoiselles (small haystacks) and the barns. He held several solo exhibitions in New York. In 1900 he exhibited at the Paul Durand-Ruel gallery in New York. In 1914, the Butler family moved to New York when Butler was commissioned to paint mural panels for William Paine's house. He contributed two paintings to the 1913 Armory Show in New York, Marine and Fourteenth of July, Paris. With his friend John Sloan he founded the Society of Independent Artists and served on its board from 1918 to 1921. The outbreak of World War I prevented Butler from returning to Giverny until 1921. In the meantime, Butler became involved with the American Red Cross and raised funds with Marthe Hoschedé.

Provenance: Estate of the Artist Jean Marie Toulgouat, the Artist's grandson Art Giverny, Oakland, California Purchased from the above by the present owner, 1994 Exhibited: (probably) Schwartz Gallery, New York, February 21 - March 21, 1921 Lot note: Composed of shifting blues, greens, and pinks, Sailboats, Upper Bay, New York, 1917, masterfully conveys the kinetic quality of water juxtaposed against a fog-filled New York City. Rather than focusing his attention on the mass of skyscrapers on the southern tip of Manhattan, Theodore Earl Butler concentrated on the combined effects of water, reflection, light, and color playing off the white-tipped waves that appear to splash dynamically around the detailed three-masted ships in the foreground. The artist used a variety of brushwork, with smoother strokes for the sky, haze, and tall buildings that act as a foil to the strong, curving strokes used for the flickering water and clear lines of the ships. The effect dissolves all shapes in space uniformly, creating a filmy, chromatic atmosphere that shimmers and flickers across the luminous canvas. A very similar composition, also titled Sailboats, Upper Bay (location unknown), was executed by the artist the same year. Butler had previously depicted the New York Harbor in other artworks, when he returned to the United States in 1900 after the death of his wife, Suzanne Hoschede in 1899. Originally from Columbus, Ohio, the artist moved to Paris in 1885 to study. In 1888, he accompanied his friend and fellow artist Theodore Robinson to Giverny to join the community of American Impressionists who lived in the area to near Claude Monet. Under the influence of one of the original impressionists, Butler began to paint garden scenes and studies of figures posed outdoors, using loose strokes with a brightly colored palette. It was also through Monet that Butler was introduced to Suzanne, the older artist's stepdaughter and favorite model. Butler also met Blanche Hoschede, Suzanne's sister, who painted Jardin en fleurs (Les rosiers) (Lot 15), also included in the present sale and which comes from the same collection. The drastic change between the bucolic landscape of Giverny and the dramatic hustle and bustle of New York clearly inspired the artist. He had lived in New York before moving to Europe and the city had changed greatly in the intervening time. Butler was only to stay for six months, but during that time he produced some of his most acclaimed artworks. Like these earlier views of New York, the present work is done in Butler's particular combination of impressionist colors and brushwork with postimpressionist abstract, flattened forms and patterning. The uniqueness of his imagery did not go unnoticed. An article published in the New York Times, March 21, 1921, mentioned the city subjects painted by the artist, "€¦the latter carrying the honors. It would be hard to find a more beautiful views of the city in the warm afternoon light."

Port du Treport, Normandy, c. 1906, is a bird's eye view of the entrance to the port and its pier stretching out into the English Channel. Theodore Earl Butler first visited the coast of Normandy in the summer of 1904, when he traveled with fellow artist Philip Leslie Hale and his family to Quiberville, a small resort village along the northern French coast. Butler continued to make annual summer visits to the area with his family to paint scenes of the seashore and its environs. Prior to 1900, the majority of Butler's landscapes depict the region surrounding Giverny. An American artist hailing from Columbus, Ohio, he first journeyed in 1888 to Giverny to join the American Impressionist community that had settled in the village to be within Claude Monet's orbit. While there, Butler eventually met and married in 1892 Suzanne Hoschede, Monet's stepdaughter. While in Giverny, the artist also met Blanche Hoschede, Suzanne's sister, who painted Jardin en fleurs (Les rosiers) (Lot 15), also included in the present sale and which comes from the same collection. Suzanne unfortunately died of a lingering illness in 1899, leaving behind Theodore and their two children, James and Lili. After a brief visit to America, the artist returned to France with his children and began to look beyond the rolling fields and bucolic gardens of Giverny for new inspiration. During the summer of 1906 alone, Butler visited multiple locations along the Normandy coast, including Dieppe, Veules-les-Roses, Trepied, Honfleur, as well as Treport, the location of the present canvas. In many of the artworks that he produced along the Normandy coast, Butler took advantage of the effects of sunlight and atmosphere and used color as he saw fit to better express himself dynamically. Port du Treport is one such example. Here, the artist has filled the foreground of his composition with shoreline buildings along the port and diffused their masses with bright, high-key tones. The use of energetic, yet elegantly discrete brushwork, causes the pictorial elements and surrounding space to seemingly dissolve into each other. With its energy-charged brushwork, vivid and highly saturated color, and boldly executed composition, Port du Treport stands as an exemplary illustration of Butler's best post-impressionist work.

Claude Monet and the artists' colony at Giverny helped transform Ohio native Theodore Butler into a premiere Post-Impressionist painter. He studied at the Art Students League in New York and at the Académies Julian and Colarossi in Paris before traveling to Giverny in 1888. At Giverny, Butler crafted his own style, combining Impressionist color and brushwork with Post-Impressionist abstracted, flattened forms and an emphasis on patterning. Butler married Monet's step-daughter Suzanne Hoschedé and, after her death, her sister, Marthe Hoschedé. Johnny in Claude Monet's Garden, Giverny is a playful depiction of Butler's grandson Jean Marie Toulgouat, also known as Johnny. Here, the viewer is looking through a portal into the idyllic garden of Claude Monet. Little Johnny engages with the viewer by returning the gaze as if to invite us into this world of youth, innocence, and joy. A symbol of purity, enlightenment, and innocence, the white horse motif is repeated throughout the composition, encapsulating Johnny and Monet's Garden in a bubble of purity and perfection. Butler had settled in Giverny in the 1880s but left for the United States to be closer to his family after his wife's death. The drastic change between the bucolic landscape of Giverny and the dramatic hustle and bustle of New York clearly inspired the artist. Butler had lived in New York previous to leaving for Europe and the city had changed greatly in the intervening time. He was only to stay for six months, but during that time he produced some of his most acclaimed artworks, including East River. Composed of iridescent blues, pinks, and purples, East River masterfully conveys the cold, moist air of a New York winter. The lower half of the large canvas depicts a ship and barge in the East River, with the shore and cityscape above. Rolling clouds from the boats' smokestacks divides the composition in half and make the vertical skyscrapers seem to float above the shoreline. Butler used a variety of brushwork, with smoother strokes for the water, smoke, and clouds, and stronger, diagonal strokes for the ships, harbor, and skyline. The effect dissolves all shapes in space uniformly, creating a filmy, chromatic atmosphere that shimmers and flickers across the luminous canvas. It offers the viewer an incredible rendering of the East River, a poetic homage to its industrialization. East River was likely included in a March 1900 exhibition at the New York location of Galerie Durand-Ruel, along with works by his father-in-law Monet. Three paintings in the exhibition were titled East River and at least one bore the title Brooklyn Bridge. These views of New York were done in Butler's particular combination of impressionist colors and brushwork with postimpressionist abstract, flattened forms and patterning. More accustomed to Monet's brand of impressionism, critics' responses to Butler's work were mixed. However, the uniqueness of his imagery did not go unnoticed. In a letter to his friend, the artist Philip Leslie Hale, Butler stated that "Papa Durand-Ruel bought one of my New York pictures. That sounds quite simple but means a lot to me." Likewise, a critic of the International Studio emphasized that the artist "goes to the extreme of vividness" and shows an "intensely penetrating vision" ("American Studio Talk," International Studio, 10, no. 37 (March 1900), p. IV). In the present work, Butler captures the classic essence of New York, a city that restlessly vibrates with life, even in its still moments.

The American impressionist Theodore Earl Butler, who was born in Columbus, Ohio, and moved to Paris to study art, established the closest connection of any American painter with the great French impressionist master Claude Monet. During the 1880s, when impressionism was beginning to catch on with American collectors, and seem less radical an approach (painting directly from nature outside, and employing broken brushwork), a greater number of artists embraced the style. Butler was among these artists, a group which also included, among others, John Leslie Breck, Frederick Carl Frieseke, Willard Metcalf, Lilla Cabot Perry and Theodore Robinson. Butler went to paint at the artists' colony of Giverny, where Monet had moved in 1883, and built his fabulous garden that provided so much inspiration for his landscape paintings. There, the two men became fast friends. Butler began painting landscapes under the influence of Monet, and in due course Butler married Monet's stepdaughter, Suzanne Hoschedé, an event immortalized in a painting entitled The Wedding March (1892) by Theodore Robinson. Butler and Suzanne bought an orchard near Monet's home and studio where they built a house and raised a family. After Suzanne's untimely death he married her sister, Marthe Hoschedé. The effect of Butler's connection with Monet is apparent in the present work of 1911, a lyrical scene of boaters on the river Epte near Giverny. The site is one Monet himself explored extensively, in a ravishing series of 21 canvases he produced in 1896-97 entitled Morning on the Seine. Every morning Monet would rise before dawn, and make his way across roads and fields towards the confluence of the Epte and the Seine, not far from his home. Rowing the short distance from the shore, he would board his Bateau-atelier and set off downstream to a specific bend in the river where he sought to capture the effects of the brightening sky, the gauzy shapes at the juncture of the confluence, the trees lining the banks in shadow while also reflecting in the water. Compositionally, Butler's Boating on the Epte owes a powerful debt to Monet's Matinée sur la Seine of 1896 (Daniel Wildenstein, Monet, catalogue raisonné, Cologne, 1996, vol. III, no. 1436, illustrated p. 594). Notably, the shapes of the massed trees at left and right, and the design of the negative space running vertically through the painting from the sky to the water in the foreground are very similar to Monet's work. But by 1911, Butler was also aware of Post-Impressionist experiments, and the works of the Fauves such that his view of the magical confluence has a more saturated, almost "straight out of the tube" pigmentation in the blues and greens. The brushwork is also less broken and flickering, opting instead for a lusher coalescence to achieve zones of deeply intense, jewel-like color. In this way, Butler moved beyond Monet into his own idiom. Theodore Earl Butler was the son of Courtland Philip Livingston Butler (1813–1891) and Elizabeth Slade Pierce (1822–1901). His son, James Butler, was also a painter, and as the grandson of Claude Monet, was one of only four painters to have painted in Monet's garden in Giverny. In France, Butler studied at the académies Julian and Colarossi and quickly received recognition from the Paris Salon, garnering an honorable mention in 1888 for his painting La Veuve. That same year, Butler visited Giverny for the first time. He eventually settled in the quiet village in 1892, thus becoming an integral part of the art community. While at Giverny, Butler was increasingly influenced by Claude Monet (1840-1926), and learned how to capture the transient beauty and changing effects of light on the French countryside, as exemplified in the present works (lots 17-19) and specifically in Le Train à Giverny. Here, Butler further explores Monet's legacy by picking a modern theme the French master had already fully explored in his Gare Saint-Lazare series from 1877. Butler made several versions of the regional train connecting Vernon to Giverny. Executed en plein-air, the work successfully captures the effects of both speed and blurriness created by the passage of train. By choosing similar hues of brown, grey and purple, the train appears to morph into the landscape, mixing in with the surrounding trees, sky and smoke. In a letter from 1904 addressed to his friend Philip Leslie Hale, Butler described his train series of paintings: "Now I have painted trains at eight hours as well as the train at ten hours, as well as the trains at fifteen and sixteen hours. In fact I have become the king of the track."

While there, he became a close friend of the Impressionist painters Theodore Robinson and his fellow student at the League, Philip Leslie Hale, with whom he set off for Paris in late 1886.
