Robert (1943) Butler Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1943 - d. 2014

African American artist Robert Butler was born in Baxley, Georgia in 1943. In 1947, he moved with his mother to Okeechobee, Florida. His mother worked three jobs, but they were still quite poor, so most of his time was spent exploring his environment. During this time painter Robert Butler became inspired by the Everglades and Lake Okeechobee, where he'd hunt and fish throughout his childhood.

Though he was considered one of the Florida Highwaymen group of painters, artist Robert Butler was added much later, and strayed from their techniques. Most Highwaymen painters used elaborate palettes, and their paintings were strictly landscapes. Robert Butler landscape paintings for sale often contained wildlife, especially turkeys, and were created with a basic color palette. He sold his oil paintings on the road, and would often paint the landscapes along his journey. Travel the world of artists by viewing breathtaking landscape paintings for sale online.

            Sep. 15, 2024

LARGE PANORAMIC ROBERT BUTLER HIGHWAYMEN O/C LANDSCAPE W/ DEER

            Est: $4,000 - $6,000

BUTLER, Robert, (American, 1943-2014): Florida Highwaymen Panoramic Landscape with Deer, Oil/Canvas, 24" x 48", signed lower right and dated '93, framed, 28 1/2" x 52 1/4". The Story of the large Robert Butler landscape in gorgeous and expensive frame as stated by the consignor: ”In 1993 I was enjoying our annual Banquet and Fundraiser for the Tampa Bay Chapter of Safari Club International. It was held at Fairgrounds with 450 folks in attendance. I had heard of Robert Butler for years and seen some small works by him. To earn a percentage and at same time benefit the SCI Chapter, to my surprise Robert was in attendance. He was at his easel in front of the entire audience and near the auctioneer along with the other 8 or 9 “Premium” items for auction. It was 5:15 when I arrived and immediately had to introduce myself and tell him what a fan of his I was. Aside from a break for some BBQ, Robert painted non-stop on the unusually large (for a Butler especially) Florida painting with brilliant colorations. Robert was one of the most famous and one of the 2 or 3 very first of the respected group of Black painters who did Florida nature scenes—the famous “Highwaymen”. He painted until 9:15 when his painting came up for Live Auction. The event had 100s of items to be sold on tables by Silent Auction for several hours. The top 20 items qualified for “Live Auction” and Robert was reserved for the next to last item of the night. The bidding was fierce and my joy by buying it was tangible. I took the rolled-up painting to the best frame shop in Tampa on Bay-to-Bay. When I unrolled it, the proprietor immediately said: “So…you got a Butler. Not only that but this the largest canvas I have ever seen by Robert… and the colors!” He insisted that I buy one of the most expensive frames he had, and the frame highlighted the painting beautifully. Framer insisted that anything less would not do ‘justice’ to the Butler original oil. Now, it is 31 years later and I turned 70 years old and have to downsize. My Butler is by far the most coveted painting for me, in my life. I hope the buyer at Burchards gets even a tenth of the satisfaction I got from living with that painting and the accolades I received from nearly everyone who ever saw it in my home.”

Robert Butler Jr. Mr. Butler Jr. has stated in a Facebook post that it was what he called a demonstration painting. "As most of you know, Robert Butler, a well known Florida landscape/wildlife artist, who was a art teacher to many also. Well, he’d often use smaller canvases to do demonstrations to students and on his tv program he had at onetime. These little demonstration paintings almost never got into other people who collected his works hands, as a matter of fact, we (me and my brothers and sisters) would often paint over them in the process of learning his craft." As a young hunter, he came to know the Everglades well and learned to “’read’ the land,” as The Highwaymen Trail, a heritage trail organization run by the city of Fort Pierce and the Florida Humanities Council, puts it. This familiarity and skill later served him well as a painter of Florida’s interior landscapes. By the early 90s, Robert Butler was considered one of the best landscape painters in Florida and owned a thriving gallery in Lakeland from which he sold his work. Popular with a wide audience, his pieces were especially sought-after by hunters and outdoor aficionados and could command as much as $7,500 per piece. Butler is known for the figures in his paintings, especially turkeys, bears, hunting dogs, cattle, and even the occasional cowboy.
