    Charge of the Uhlans Watercolour representing the charge of the Uhlans on a French village during the war of 1870. The work is monogrammed E.S.T., dated 1873, and bears the artist's stamp. Elizabeth Southerden Thompson met the painters Meissonnier and Detaille in Paris in 1870, who sparked her interest in military painting. She married General Butler, hence the nickname 'Lady Butler'.     English, first quarter 20th century. A print after "Halt!" by Lady Elizabeth Butler (British, 1846-1933), the original painting being in the British Royal Collection. Painting depicts the end of the last charge of the 10th British Hussars at Waterloo, with a single solder on horseback thrusting sword upward and yelling over shoulder in front of an intense battle scene. Inscribed below image "Halt! End of the last charge of the 10th (British) Hussars at Waterloo, By Lady Butler. From the original painting now in possession of His Majesty the King. The French, though fewer in number (than the Allied and Prussian armies) would have won the victory but for the obstinate and unconquerable bravery of the British troops, which alone prevented them (extract from Napoleon's Correspondence)). Framed 34.25" x 28.5", unframed sight size 23.5" x 18".Note: The lithograph was created in 1914 to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the battle of Waterloo.
