Taped end to end, these scrolls of money became known as "short snorters." - Harvard Business School A short snorter is a banknote which was signed by various persons traveling together or meeting up at different events and records who was met. The tradition was started by bush pilots in Alaska in the 1920's and subsequently spread through the growth of military and commercial aviation. If you signed a short snorter and that person could not produce it upon request, they owed you a dollar or a drink (a "short snort", aviation and alcohol do not mix!) Purchased Julie Saul Gallery. ANDREW BUSH (Saint Louis, USA, 1956). "Women raicing southwest at 41 mph", California 1997. Photograph, copy 1/3. Signed and titled on the back. Measurements: 120 x 183 cm; 125.5 x 188 cm (frame). This large format photograph belongs to the series "Vector Portraits", about which the artist explains: "I started Vector Portraits wanting to photograph drivers as a way of looking at the city. But soon this generated other projects related to the public/private of spaces, such as my Envelopes series. With the envelopes I thought I could catalogue subtle distinctions between public and private spaces, or the labels we attach based on what we intuit from the color, shape and flap of an envelope. I noticed that the weight of the flap produced a shadow that could be read as both a kind of denial of entry and an invitation to look inside." Based in Los Angeles, photographer Andrew Bush trained at Pomona College and Yale University, and has been showing his work since 1984 in group exhibitions, and since 1986 in solo shows, both in the United States and Europe. He is currently represented at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the International Centre of Photography in New York and LACMA in Los Angeles, among others.
