Attr. Elizabeth Eaton Burton Hammered Shell Lamp

California, France,1869-1937 Silvered hammered metal lamp with opaline glass textured cabochons and large shell edge over hammered metal and opaline glass base. Burton was the daughter of artist Charles F. Eaton (1843-1930) whom she learned much about art from. She first exhibited her works in art fairs and shows in southern California, showcasing her broad range of metal works, stained glass, woodcuts, watercolors, leather tooling, and book binding. A true Renaissance woman, Burton was well known for her decorative works often utilizing metal, leather, and shells. In the early 1900's, she patented a technique for using ornamental leather on furniture and screens, being highly praised by Gustav Stickley in his magazine "The Craftsman."

ELIZABETH EATON BURTON (American, 1869-1937); Tooled suede album containing over fifty photographs of Gertrude McCall's Santa Clara, CA camping expedition, ca. 1900; Provenance: Estate of Margaret Willcox, great niece of Gertrude and Jane McCall; Unsigned; 5 1/2'' x 7''; Note: The album is inscribed, ''Gertrude McCall camping out expedition on the Island of Santa Clara opposite Santa Barbara;'' ''with Margaret Keating [sister];'' ''Margaret and I went camping; I forget who the others are.'' Gertrude was Jane Byrd McCall Radcliffe-Whitehead's sister. Before they founded Byrdcliffe, Jane and Ralph Radcliffe-Whitehead built ''Arcady'' in Santa Barbara near the studio of their friends Charles Frederick Eaton and Elizabeth Eaton Burton. The iris and fleur-de-lis were Whitehead symbols that were incorporated into Byrdcliffe Colony logos.
