    Suite of four duotone lithographed views of Honolulu by G.H. Burgess: "Port of Honolulu," "Diamond-Head from Look-Out," Diamond Head from Hon[olu]lu Beach," and "Nuanu Valley from the New Church Beritania St." [San Francisco]: Printed by Britton & Rey, 1857. 7 3/4 by 12 5/8 inches, professionally remargined on three sides with 1850s paper to approximately 10 x 14 1/2 inches, matted to 15 3/4 x 18 1/2 inches. Trimmed and remargined at top and sides just outside plate mark, the only loss being to last letter of publisher's imprint on "Port of Honolulu," a few pale spots and faint smudges to skies, overall clean. BURGESS'S RARE VIEWS OF HONOLULU. Burgess, best-known for his vivid depictions of the California Gold Rush, journeyed to Hawaii in 1855 and remained for two years. His was the second series of views of Honolulu to be published by Britton & Rey after those of Paul Emmert. "In 1857 Emmert's lithographs were surpassed in quality, accuracy, and refinement of execution by the work of George H. Burgess" (Forbes). The complete set of Burgess's Honolulu views is comprised of the four offered here plus one additional view, "Ewa from Honolulu," not present. Rare. See Forbes Encounters with Paradise: Views of Hawaii and its People 1778-1941 pp 94 & 152.
