Orville Bulman (American, 1904-1978): An original oil painting on canvas titled "Petit Compagnons" ("Little Companions"), produced in 1957. This whimsical figural seascape is crafted in the style of Haitian folk artists and depicts a motorboat painted in a colorful palette of pink, yellow, gold, and orange. The scene includes five figures aboard, among them two small nude child figures, set against the backdrop of green Caribbean waters under a blue and gold sky. The painting is presented in a rustic wood frame. Work Size: 15 x 18 in. Dimensions: 25 X 29 X 2 in. Sight Size: 7 1/2 x 9 1/4 in. Frame Thickness: 1 3/4 in. #5194 Orville Bulman, a self-taught artist, was born in 1904 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. A year later his father, Elvah O. Bulman, invented what was to become a long line of ingenious products, a twine holder and dispenser. Subsequently, Elvah (or E. O. as he was called) continued to create dispensers and cutters for virtually all goods that could be rolled up. Before long, the Bulman Paper Cutter became de rigueur for any self-respecting grocery or dry goods establishment in the early 1900s, and Bulman was expected to carry on the hugely successful family business, which dutifully, he did. After graduating from Grand Rapids Central High School, however, he traveled to Chicago for one year to work as a newspaper cartoonist before entering the business world. While helping his father run the company, Bulman's true artistic calling was too loud for him to ignore. After devoting himself to the corporation in the twenties and thirties, he exhibited at New York's Society of Independent Artists in 1937, and for a short time around 1948 exhibited with the Woodstock Art Colony. In the late 1940s he was painting New York City social realist paintings as well as dark, haunting pictures of old barns and churches. Bulman's life in Palm Beach, Florida, began around 1946 when he, after sustaining recurring injuries to his neck, began to spend the winters in that small affluent town. Although he was in traction intermittently for eight years, he was still able to paint, and he took advantage of being away from the company to devote himself to his art. He adopted Palm Beach as his second home, exhibited frequent one-man shows at the renowned Worth Avenue Gallery, and traveled extensively throughout Florida, Louisiana and Alabama to paint African-American inspired genre scenes. These poignant paintings of the segregated south (especially the Florida scenes) brought national attention to his art. (From the Biography of Orville Bulman by Deborah C Pollack).

Titled, "La Paraise", depicts a fantasy scene of a boat with two Haitian female figures, a small child-like figure, a lion and two chickens, oil on canvas, signed lower right. Nearly identical to the one sold at Doyles w same composition very similar size, the boat and the fish all the same but the title of ship is different. Orville Bulman is known for fantasy, genre, portrait, and coastal view painting. A self-taught artist, Bulman was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. After graduating high school, he worked as a newspaper cartoonist before assisting in running the family business. In the late 1940s, Bulman was painting Social Realist paintings as well as dark, haunting pictures of old barns and churches. During the early 1950s, while painting regionalist scenes of American country and southern life, Bulman happened to see pictures of Haiti and admired the island's style, verve and gracefully trimmed houses with lacy appliqué carved wood. Painting seven imaginative works inspired by photographs, he subsequently visited Haiti for the first time in March of 1952, and traveled to other Caribbean islands during the 1950s as well. Bulman loved Haiti and its people and felt that they were the best inspiration for further work. He lived with the islanders in the rustic hills for a time and felt like he was a part of their village, deeply experiencing their religion, humor and lifestyle and respecting their way of life far better than other Americans. Overall size: 23 7/8 x 27 1/4 in. Sight size: 18 1/2 x 21 3/4 in.

      Est: $60,000 - $100,000

Orville Bulman (American, 1904–1978) Les Spectateurs Signed ‘Orville Bulman’ bottom right; also signed verso, oil on canvas 36 1/8 x 40 in. (91.8 x 101.6 cm.) Executed in 1967. Provenance Hammer Galleries, New York, New York (per stamp on stretcher verso), by 1967. Private Collection. Edward and Deborah Pollack Fine Art, Palm Beach, Florida. Acquired directly from the above. Private Collection, Florida. John H. Surovek Galleries, Palm Beach, Florida. Acquired directly from the above. Private Collection, Tennessee. Literature Hammer Galleries, Orville Bulman, Recent Paintings, October 31 through November 11, 1967, no. 58 (illustrated). Deborah C. Pollack, Orville Bulman: An Enchanted Life and Fantastic Legacy, Blue Heron Press, Palm Beach, 2006, p. 212 (illustrated). Note A highly prolific artist, Orville Bulman was a successful businessman turned painter. Michigan born, Bulman maintained a second home in Palm Beach by 1946 and became a highly popular figure there. He also travelled throughout the Southern United States, as well as the Caribbean and Haiti. He felt a kinship with Haiti, and the art and people of that country served as an important inspiration for his painting. As in the present work, Bulman’s best canvases are characterized by their bright colors, tropical vistas replete with jungle animals, and overall sense of whimsy, which recall the mysterious, often mystical, art of French artist Henri Rousseau, also known as Le Douanier Rousseau. The unlined canvas in overall good to very condition, with a glossy finish throughout and a light layer of dust. Small flake at upper center right in the background. Some texturized paint along the bottom outer edges of the canvas, which is part of the artist's technique. Thin craquelure at center, seemingly stabilized and flat. Examination under UV light reveals a thick layer of greenish varnish throughout. We notice scattered spots of restoration throughout, all minor in size. For example, a horizontal repaired scratch along the top outer edge at upper center, to the right of the sun (on which we notice minuscule inpainted flakes). Various repairs at bottom left quadrant, on the front tiger's body. Similar repairs at bottom right, on the lioness. Faint highlights, and some restoration on the lion's body at front, and below on the grass. Some more repairs, all small in size, spread out across the center line of the canvas, on the leaves and vegetation. Some more at upper center, just below the sun. The ourang-outan is intact. See Specialist's pictures for more details. Frame: 41 1/2 x 45 1/2 x 2 in. To request additional information, please email Raphaël Chatroux at rchatroux@freemansauction.com
