      JOHAN BULL (1893-1945) FOR NORGES DELTAGELSE I DE OLYMPISKE LEKE. Window card. Circa 1932. 22x14 inches, 55 3/4x35 1/2 cm. Condition B+ / A-: slight water staining, flaking and darkening at edges; minor abrasions in margins and image; pin holes in corners. Mounted on display board. A promotion for the Norwegian American Olympic Committee seeking contributions to help send Norwegian athletes to Lake Placid in 1932. Bull was born in Oslo but moved to America in 1925 and began contributing cartoons to The New Yorker.

Group of 4 gouache on board or paper illustrations, 383 x 507 mm to 225 x 350 mm, signed ("Johan Bull"), 1938-1940, a few stray marks, one piece evenly toned.A arresting and colorful group of unpublished work in a geometric style that brings to mind 8-bit computer graphics, but probably more accurately Navaho rugs and pre-Columbian art. The pieces depict mainly Norse legends, but one depicts a Southwestern scene.

Other athletes depicted include Bill Tilden, Suzanne Lenglen, John Doeg, Watson Washburn, Vincent Richards, Helen Wills, Helen Jacobs, Molla Mallory and Phoebe Holcroft Watson and Henry Wilfred "Bunny" Austin.

      Framed original pen and ink by Johan Bull c. 1930. New Yorker Staff Illustrator. Given to his friend and colleague, R. John Holmgren, in the 1930s. PROVENANCE: The Estate of R. John Holmgren. Born in Oslo, Norway in 1893, Johan Bull died in Stowe, Vermont in 1945. Johan Bull (was a self-taught artist and etcher and worked from 1918-1925 for Norway’s largest newspaper The Oslo Aftenposten. He came to America in 1925 on a visit. By chance he went to the office of the New Yorker magazine, which had started four months earlier. Harold Ross asked him to go on an assignment to illustrate a sports event. He stayed in New York, became a staff illustrator for the New Yorker and contributed cartoons and illustrations to many publications including Colliers, The New York Times and The New Yorker.
