During WWI, most of America's livestock and wheat was being sent overseas to feed the troops as well as Europeans whose land was turned into battlefields. Food became exceedingly scarce and rationed heavily on the homefront as the US' involvement continued into 1918. This poser created by the United States Food Administration (a precursor to today's FDA) encourages the American public to increase their consumption of fish, since they require less resources to feed and are plentiful. This is an original vintage poster, not a reproduction. It is in excellent condition and has been archivally backed onto linen. We fully guarantee the authenticity of our items.

CHARLES LIVINGSTON BULL AMERICAN, NEW YORK, 1874-1932 GROUP OF FOUR POSTERS: BATHE, SLEEP, EAT AND PLAY, 1931 (4) Catalogue note: From the age of four, Charles Livingston Bull (1847-1932) had a profound interest in animals and nature and a definitive talent for drawing. While in school at the Rochester Institute of Technology, he obtained an apprenticeship in taxidermy, learning the complete anatomy of many animals. Yet taxidermy was not entirely satisfying for Bull; after work he spent hours at the zoo sketching animals and took night classes at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. After seven years of sketching, Bull left for New York to pursue a career in illustration. Known chiefly as an animal illustrator, Bull literally drew from his experience as a taxidermist at the National Museum in Washington, D.C. He painted 19 covers for the [Saturday Evening] Post over a span of 28 years. In his work, Bull displays strong elements of design, typically flat and decorative. His images, whether an eagle soaring in flight or a fox on the prowl, gave a majestic, even startling, life and grace to his wild subjects. Original Vintage WWI Poster Eat More Fish Save the Products of the Land by Bull c1918

          Est: $900 - $1,400

During WWI, most of America's livestock and wheat was being sent overseas to feed the troops as well as Europeans whose land was turned into battlefields. Food became exceedingly scarce and rationed heavily on the homefront as the US' involvement continued into 1918. This poser created by the United States Food Administration (a precursor to today's FDA) encourages the American public to increase their consumption of fish, since they require less resources to feed and are plentiful. This is an original vintage poster, not a reproduction. It is in excellent condition and has been archivally backed onto linen. We fully guarantee the authenticity of our items.

          Eat More Fish. 1917.

          Est: $800 - $1,000

ARTIST: CHARLES LIVINGSTON BULL (1874-1932) SIZE: 20 1/8 x 30 in./51.2 x 76.2 cm PRINTER: Heywood, Strasser & Voigt Litho., New York DESCRIPTION: Even at 103 years old, this message from the United States Food Administration wouldn't be out of place today among health- and climate-conscious diners (so long as the fish is wild caught, of course). In 1917, however, it was a deadly serious appeal to prevent the U.S. from floundering in Flanders. The standard military ration (its protein portion, at any rate) consisted of 12 ounces fresh bacon or a pound of corned beef. An army moves on its belly, and by May 1918 there were over 1,000,000 doughboys in France, with 10,000 more arriving each day, each demanding three squares by nightfall. So, for the soldiers' hake, put pollock on thy plate. Charles Livingston Bull rose to artistic fame through animal-oriented wartime propaganda, and later, Ringling Bros. Circus posters—a suitable progression from his first job as a taxidermist in Washington, D.C. (Art Nouveau; World War I; American; Food/Drink; Propaganda)
