A Voyage to the South Seas, in the Years 1740-1, first edition, woodcut headpieces and decorative initials, engraved bookplate of Arthur & Elizabeth Holdsworth, lightly browned throughout with occasional foxing, contemporary sprinkled calf, neatly rebacked, red morocco label to spine, rubbed at joints and extremities, lower joint starting at foot, [Sabin 9108], 8vo, Printed for Jacob Robinson, 1743. ⁂ A classic story of shipwreck and survival, written by the gunner and carpenter on the doomed vessel Wager, one of Anson's fleet. They describe the wrecking of the ship off the coast of Chile, the survivors' life onshore, and their subsequent voyage in a longboat through the Straits of Magellan to Rio de Janeiro.

        JOHN D. BULKELEY (1911 – 1996) Vice Admiral and one of the most decorated naval officers. Bulkeley received the Medal of Honor and was also the PT boat captain who evacuated Gen. Douglas MacArthur from Corregidor and commanded at the Battle of La Ciotat. Fine association signed book: "They Were Expendable" by W. L. White (New York: Harcourt, Brace & Co.), first edition, 1942. 210pp. 8vo., inscribed by Bulkeley, one of the subjects of the book, on the front flylef: "To John J. Hopkins with my best wishes and thanks for all that you have done for PTs...". Very good, with torn dust wrapper. JOHN J. HOPKINS (1893-1957) was a senior administrator of Elco, which built 400 PT boats, and later founded General Dynamics.

LONDON: JACOB ROBINSON, 1743 8vo (202 x 122mm.), xx, 220pp., illustration: woodcut intials, head- and tail-pieces, binding: contemporary polished calf gilt, spine in six compartments with raised bands richly gilt, title slightly discoloured at margins, leaf H with small hole in pagination, joints partly cracked LITERATURE Sabin 9108; Borba de Moraes p.133 (1757 edition); Hill p.38; Spence 209 NOTE first edition (with the authors' names on the title). a very good copy. "This book is one of the main accounts of the wreck of the Wager off the southern coast of Chile after passing through the Strait of Magellan. The ship was part of Anson's fleet, which was on its way to harass the Spanish. The gunner, John Bulkeley, and the carpenter, John Cummins conducted the mutinous part of the crew [across Patagonia, etc.] until they arrived safely in Rio de Janeiro" (Hill). This account was a source for Lord Byron's Don Juan. Byron's grandfather John sailed as a midshipman aboard Anson's ship Wager and Byron used details of the shipwreck.
