H.M. Queen Elizabeth II photographed in the white drawing room at Buckingham Palace. England, 1965. DIMENSIONS Approximate size: 15.3 x 20.4 cm. (6 x 8 in.) ARTIST NAME PHOTOGRAPHER: Anthony Harold Buckley (1912 – 1993) Anthony Buckley is best-known as a royal photographer in the 1960s and 1970s. Buckley had initially gained a reputation for his portraits of leading actors and actresses of the day when he first opened his studio in 1937. After serving in World War II, he worked from a studio on St Alban's Street and then in the 1950s on New Bond Street, when he purchased the premises and business of Janet Jevons. In the early 1950s, he worked with Dorothy Wilding, who took the original photo of the Queen which was used for postage stamps from 1952 to 1967. His reputation as a leading stage portraitist grew rapidly. From the beginning of the sixties Anthony Buckley regularly photographed the Royal Family, notably for Royal Mail stamps. In the 1960s he moved to Grosvenor Street, an address that better reflected his enhanced status as a well-established royal photographer. As Anthony Buckley was approaching retirement, he sold his business to another well-known photographer, Dennis Constantine, and took more of a back seat. His prints spanning the years 1937-75 were donated to the National Portrait Gallery in 1995.
