BUCCI ANSELMO (ITALIAN 1887-1955) III Mostra Internazionale Delle Arti Decorative Nella Villareale Di Monza, 1927 lithograph on paper 39 x 55 cm (15 x 21 in.) [sheet], 25 x 39 cm (9 x 15 in.) [plate]; unframed signed lower left LOT NOTES Anselmo Bucci was an Italian painter and printmaker. In 1922, he fell in with the movement for a "return to order" of the Novecento Italiano in the post-war period, and took part in a joint exhibition at the Venice Biennale, first at the 12th Esposizione Internazionale d'Arte di Venezia in 1920 and then again in 1924, on which occasion one of his works was bought for the city's gallery of modern art. One of the founding members of the Sette pittori del Novecento Italiano, he took part in the groupÕs first show in 1926 but not the second. During the 1930s, when he divided his time between Milan and Paris, Neoclassical rigidity gave way to greater freedom in his painting. It was in 1938 that he produced the fresco Italian Civilization Putting an End to Slavery for the Palazzo di Giustizia in Milan. PROVENANCE This lot comes from the collection of Viktor Kholodkov (1948-2015), who fulfilled his passion for books, avant-garde design and paper memorabilia by devoting his life to collecting and dealing of prominent works of Russian graphic art of the first half of the 20th century. The dedicated collector acquired a multitude of books and artworks throughout decades, meticulously labeling and archiving every single item. Many came directly from the most preeminent artists of the time, as well as from their families and estates. He also possessed a vast number of drawings from the famous collection of another avant-garde enthusiast, Nikolai Khardzhiev. After leaving the USSR in 1989 and settling in California, Viktor continued his work as a Soviet art dealer and critic, actively publishing various articles and contributing to several major Russian avant-garde exhibitions across the U.S., such as the 1991 Russia Under Fire in the 40s on the West Coast and the 1992 Guggenheim exhibition The Great Utopia: The Russian and Soviet Avant-Garde. Kholodkov also contributed to the archives of the biggest American institutions. His sophisticated selection of over 2000 Russian sheet music covers was acquired by The Library of Congress, and an extensive amount of material related to VKhUTEMAS is now at the J. Paul Getty Museum. CONDITION The print is in fragile but age-appropriate condition, overall creasing, water damage area lower left, several tears along the left edge and upper edge, paper aging. N.B. All lots are sold in as-is condition at the time of sale. • Anselmo Bucci - "Porta Ticinese Milano 1922" (Porta Ticinese Milan 1922)
            Dec. 02, 2023

Anselmo Bucci - "Porta Ticinese Milano 1922" (Porta Ticinese Milan 1922)

            Est: €4,500 - €5,000

Anselmo Bucci, son of Achille Muzio, was born on May 23, 1887, in Fossombrone. After completing his classical studies at the Marco Foscarini high school in Venice, he devoted himself to drawing at Francesco Salvini's school in Este. In 1904-05, he was a student at the Brera Academy in Milan, and in 1906 he moved to Paris, remaining there until 1915 and focusing his attention on engraving. During this period, he produced several collections of etchings, inspired by French post-Impressionist graphic culture, such as "Le petit Paris qui bouge" (1908) and "Paris qui bouge" (1909), also earning an honorable mention at the Salon des artistes français in 1910. His style reflected both the influences of French post-impressionism and the traces of Fattori's study, maintaining a dry manner and avoiding rhetoric. The Paris period marked a significant moment for Bucci's art, in which he came closer to the taste of artists such as Jean-François Raffaelli and Pierre Bonnard, influences evident in works such as "L'écraseur," "Touaregs à Paris," "Avenue Rachel," and others. During World War I, Bucci was a war volunteer and documented life on the front through etchings and lithographs, such as "Croquis du front italien" (1918) and "Marina a terra" (1918). After the war, his art underwent a significant change. Although a skilled engraver, Bucci decided to explore painting, moving toward a return to classicism, in contrast to avant-garde currents. In 1922, Bucci was the promoter of the "Novecento Italiano" group, which sought to foster a neoclassical orientation. His major effort in this period was the painting "The Painters" (1921-1924), which represented his antithetical thinking to the avant-garde movements. Bucci maintained his ideal detachment from contemporaneity, advocating a preference for the ancients over the moderns. Over the next few years, Bucci also established himself as a writer, publishing works such as "Il libro della Bigia" (1942) and contributing articles to Corriere della Sera. He died in Monza on November 19, 1955, leaving a significant imprint on the Italian artistic sphere with his extraordinary vitality, moral independence and irony that was manifested in both his graphic works and his literary output.
