Andrew Bucci (American/Mississippi, 1922-2014), "Dawn", oil on canvas, signed lower left, label with artist and title on stretcher, 24 in. x 30 in., framed. Provenance: Natchez Art Association. Note: Mississippi artist Andrew Bucci studied painting under Marie Hull while working on a degree in architectural engineering from Louisiana State University during the 1930s and again following World War II, when he also enrolled at The Art Institute of Chicago for his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts. Bucci was a major contributor to the Mississippi and Washington D.C. arts communities for many decades. His abstract paintings focus on calligraphic lines, explosions of color and expressionistic brushstrokes - concepts rooted in Abstract Expressionism but combined in a distinctive way all his own. Bucci's later influence on Marie Hull's successful ventures into abstraction are obvious in the dynamic works by both artists offered here. Ref.: Black, Patti Carr. Art in Mississippi 1720-1980. He studied with Mary Clare Sherwood in Vicksburg and later, in the 1930's, with Marie Hull in Jackson. He continued to paint with Hull during his undergraduate career at Louisiana State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in architectural engineering. During World War II, he was stationed in Paris, where he worked as a meteorologist, and studied at the Acad?mie Julian. After the war, he worked in Vicksburg at the U.S. Weather Bureau until 1947, when his avocation of art became his vocation and he enrolled at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Art Institute in 1952 and his Master of Fine Arts two years later. Washington D.C. has been home for Bucci for several decades, and where he has exhibited with the Society of Washington Artists, at the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, and at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. He also has remained active in Mississippi and in the southeast. He is represented by galleries in Jackson and in New Orleans, and his work is widely collected by private individuals and by museums, including the Arkansas Art Center, Little Rock; the Brooks Memorial Gallery, Memphis; Delta State University, Cleveland, Mississippi; Florence Art Gallery, South Carolina; the Mississippi Museum of Art; and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans. On February 26, 2009, Governor Haley Barbour presented Bucci with the 2009 Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts for Lifetime Achievement. In 2012, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters. coleprattgallery.com/artistworks.php?artistId=1013&artistName=Andrew+Bucci: Originally from Vicksburg, Mississippi, Andrew Bucci's (1922-2014) paintings are deeply rooted in the themes of Abstract Expressionism. He employs color and line to create masterful abstractions of both figures and landscape. Drawn from his life experiences in the modern South, Bucci's work cannot be limited by one category of abstraction. His paintings are bursts of pure color and graceful lines; they are fresh, uplifting, and energetic.
