Condition B+: expertly-repaired tear from bottom left edge, into central image; overpainting in margins; slight time-staining along left edge. The grandeur and scope of the American and Canadian Rocky Mountains are captured in the picture of towering trees and the dominating mountain, with a hiker and a lodge to lend a sense of perspective. Franklin Roosevelt, in an attempt to encourage citizens to travel to the National Parks, declared 1934 to be National Parks Year. Speaking from Glacier National Park on August 5th, 1934, Roosevelt declared "I am glad to say that there has been a magnificent response and that the numbers visiting our national parks has shown a splendid increase." Posters were heavily involved in this campaign, as were National Parks Year postage stamps, which were released the same year. rare. We have found no other example at auction in over 10 years.

This poster was designed in 1949 by Oscar M. Bryn (1883-1967) for Santa Fe Railway. The image shows the famous and impressive Grand Canyon in Arizona, with a couple in the foreground admiring the views. On the bottom, the text tells the public that Santa Fe is the only railroad that enters the National Park of the Grand Canyon. Santa Fe Railway was founded in 1859. The company helped settle the mid-west in the later part of the 19th Century by selling real estate and farm land sanctioned by Congress. They became the second transcontinental railway to exist and expanded further with north-south routes in California. Santa Fe had a robust freight business and expanded its transportation reach with a bussing system. The company was featured in a 1945 song, "On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe" sung by Judy Garland for the film "The Harvey Girls." In 1996, the railway merged with the Burlington Northern Railway to form the Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Railway. Oscar M. Bryn grew up in San Francisco and studied at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute. He started his career as an illustrator for the San Francisco Chronicle, creating illustrations for other magazines at the same time. In 1913 moved to Los Angeles and started working for Santa Fe, for whom he worked 37 years until he retired in 1950. He also worked for Marshall Field and for many years was art director for Erwin Wasey Company. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction.
