  • Montana Duane Bryers "Hilda" Advertising Calendar

Montana Duane Bryers "Hilda" Advertising Calendar

    Est: $150 - $300

For your consideration is a Vintage Montana Duane Bryers "Hilda" Advertising Calendar 1975. This calendar is for Glasgow Distributors of Glasgow, Montana; distributors of Montana's Great Falls Select Beer. Duane Bryers (1911-2012) was an American painter, illustrator, and sculptor. He was America’s top western calendar artist – his calendars were published by Brown & Bigelow, number one in the calendar field, and was a member of the "Tucson 7" that included Harley Brown, Howard Terpning, Don Crowley, Ken Riley, Bob Kuhn, and Tom Hill. He remains best known for his watercolors of playful female models, particularly his recurring character named Hilda. A curvaceous redhead often depicted in a state of undress, Hilda was the subject of numerous illustrations that highlighted her playfulness and clumsiness. The character found a huge following and became a pin-up calendar staple from 1956 until the mid 1980s. The upper two-thirds of the poster-sized calendar displays "Hilda" sitting on an upholstered stool in front of the pot-belly wood stove wearing a one-piece red union suit. She was peeling apples, a bowl of apples sits on her lap, but the knife has fallen out of her hand. Her face features a surprised expression as her scruffy dog pulls on the rear flap of the union suit, exposing her southbound caboose. A truly humourous scene. Artist's signature is next to her left foot, her name is above the dog's head. The lower third of the calendar features company contact and ownership information including address and telephone number centered between logos for "Great Falls Select Beer Brewed With Extra Care" on the right and "Olympia Light Beer It's The water" on the left. Below is the solitary sheet calendar for December 1975, with logos for "Original Pabst Blue Ribbon" on the right and "Carling Heidelberg Beer" on the left. "Printed by Brown & Bigelow Div. of Standard Publishing Corp. US" is printed on the calendar bottom right and poster bottom left corners. This advertising calendar is in good overall condition, very vivid colours displayed, slight fraying exhibited on vertical edges. Measures 16"W x 33.5"L.

(54.61 cm x 71.12 cm) Description: Bracing against the cold, Duane Bryers's depiction of a cowboy on horseback in a field being covered in snow shows a different situation than many of his other works. With its head hung low, the horse ridden by the cowboy appears cold and sullen, while the cowboy himself seems disappointed and frustrated by the weather as well. Although the cattle across the field are barely visible through the snow, they appear to vacantly wander through the fields in search of exposed grass to graze on.
