The Libenský-Brychtová duo is one of the most sought-after artists on the world market. Libenský and Brychtová have adapted the technology of fused glass to large-scale architectural projects. These can still be described as unique and world-wide. Stanislav Libenský and his wife, Jaroslava Brychtová, created sculptures and stained glass from glass fused in a mould. They were also involved in chamber works. However, their work is dominated by monumental works - walls, lattices, stained glass (for example, the window to St. Wenceslas Chapel in St. Vitus Cathedral), geometrically stylized figural motifs. From the second half of the 1960s, they applied abstract geometric form in works with a symbolic message. At that time, among others, crystal sculptures, spheres in a cube and cubes in a sphere were created, in which the artists manipulated light effects. The duo made their mark on the public consciousness primarily with fused glass sculptures at the World Expo 58 in Brussels, where they won the Grand Prix for an object with colored zoomorphic stones, and their exhibits at the 1967 Montreal World's Fair also attracted admiration. At Expo 70 in Osaka, they presented their well-known work River of Life. As a professor at the University of Applied Arts between 1963 and 1987, Stanislav Libenský educated two generations of professional and inventive Czech artists. He also worked at several universities and summer schools in the USA. As an educator and artist, he won many awards, was awarded honorary foreign doctorates, frequently spoke at world congresses, lectured at glass conferences, served on various foreign juries and participated in numerous symposia. Together with Jaroslava Brychtová, he is represented in many galleries and museums both in the Czech Republic and abroad. Glass dimensions: 80h x 90.5w x 2.5d Stand dimensions: 96.5h x 90w x 60d Box dimensions: 97h x 113w x 19.5 In 1954, Stanislav Libenský and Jaroslava Brychtová began working together in the Czech glassmaking center of Železný Brod. In 1963, the partners married in Prague. During their long collaboration they developed the mold-melting technique that would allow them to create their distinctive abstract style of art glass. This style and technique made Libenský and Brychtová the most internationally influential of the Czech artists who worked behind the Iron Curtain from roughly the 1950s to the 1980s. Fundamental to the artists' work is a conceptual and metaphysical approach, related to Czech cubism and philosophy. Light is the central idea, representing the fourth dimension, a notion they termed "light-space". This light-space is represented by the intentional definition, direction and manipulation of light in their works, through the use of prisms, lenses, and rough textured planes. Titled 'The Kiss', a fabulous piece of Czech Republic art glass, etch-signed Brychtova Libensky. Jaroslava Brychtova and Stanislav Libensky were a married couple who created some of the defining cast glass sculptures and architectural installations of the 20th century. Their artistic partnership lasted almost 50 years, and works ranged from luminous geometry to spiritual figuration. In Communist Czechoslovakia, where the couple made their seminal work, artists who might have otherwise been censored could hide out in the “minor” art of glass while pursuing ideas like abstraction. The couple’s work was underwritten by the state, at least initially, and they exhibited at World Expos in Montreal in 1967 and Osaka, Japan, in 1970. After the 1968 Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia, the Communists cracked down on artists. Ms. Brychtova and Mr. Libensky were expelled from the party and forbidden to travel abroad together for a time. Over the decades, as their international reputation grew and their work was displayed at the Met and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, a younger generation of female glass artists drew inspiration from Jaroslava Brychtova. Libenský Stanislav (Sezemice 1921 - 2002 Železný Brod) and Brychtová Jaroslava (1924 Železný Brod) Signs of the Zodiac - Leo, honey-coloured fused glass, cut, polished, signed S. Lib J. Bry 1961, diameter 20.5 cm, height 3.5 cm (Zí) Stanislav Libenský (1921 - 2002) - probably the most important Czech glass artist and teacher of the 2nd half of the 20th century. After studying at the glassmaking schools in Haida and Eisenbrod, he graduated from the Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design in Prague. In 1945, he returned to the Glassmaking Professional Secondary School in Haida, where he led the department of glass painting and etching. In 1954, Libenský took the position of principal of the Glassmaking Professional School of Applied Arts in Eisenbrod. In that position, he built on the work of Jaroslav Brychta, a member of the teaching staff and later principal of the school, and also an experimentor, who was the first in the Czech lands to use the forgotten technique of fusing glass in a mould in his artistic works. This is how his daughter, Jaroslava Brychtová, became acquainted with the technique. Jaroslava Brychtová graduated from the Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design in Prague in the studio of Professor Štipl and later also from the Academy of Sculpture in the studio of Professor Lauda. At the glassmaking school, she met its principal Stanislav Libenský, with whom she executed his drawings in fused glass. That is how the cooperation of Stanislav Libenský and Jaroslava Brychtová and their famous Head-Bowl /1954/ came about. The two authors, Jaroslava Brychtová and Stanislav Libenský, worked and lived together in a mutual symbiosis for fifty years. Their cooperation gave rise to works that significantly contributed to the shaping of modern glass aesthetics. The works of Stanislav Libenský and Jaroslava Brychtová are in the collections of major galleries and artistic museums around the world and their work has an integral place in the history of 20th century art.
