William Cullen Bryant (November 3, 1794 - June 12, 1878) was an American romantic poet, journalist, and long-time editor of the New York Evening Post. Although he is now thought of as a New Englander, Bryant, for most of his lifetime, was thoroughly a New Yorker - and a very dedicated one at that. He was a major force behind the idea that became Central Park, as well as a leading proponent of creating the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He was one of a group of founders of New York Medical College. He had close affinities with the Hudson River School of art and was an intimate friend of Thomas Cole. He defended immigrants and, at some financial risk to himself, championed the rights of workers to form labor unions. James John Roosevelt, known as James I. (December 14, 1795 - April 5, 1875) was an American politician, jurist, businessman, and member of the Roosevelt family. An active Democrat, he campaigned for Andrew Jackson for president in 1828. He was elected alderman in 1828 and 1830, was a member of the New York State Assemblyin 1835 and 1840, and served in the United States Congress from 1841 to 1843, but declined to seek reelection. Roosevelt became a justice of the New York Supreme Court in 1851, and during one term was ex officio judge of the State Court of Appeals. From 1860 to 1861, he was the 15th U.S. District Attorney for Southern New York. He studied foreign law in the courts of England, the Netherlands, and France

Presidential and Political Autographs 1860s. Commercially produced autograph album originally compiled by Mary Roxana Birchard (1827-1876), Rutherford B. Hayes's cousin; thereafter continued by other family members, containing approximately forty signatures, mostly clipped, or short inscriptions, some full letters. Signers include William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878), Oliver Wendell Holmes Senior (1809-1894), Rutherford B. Hayes (1822-1893), Herbert Hoover (1874-1964), an autograph letter from Daniel Webster (1782-1852), signatures of the Supreme Court of Vermont c. 1890-1899, Swami Saradananda (1865-1927), and others. Covers and binding of the album mostly intact, some pages detached, some letters mounted, some loose, 7 x 8 in. Ms. Birchard seems to have employed a clever approach to her autograph solicitations, based on some of the responses she received. Her correspondents thank her for sending a "birch barque" with her original note. Those who mention the little boats seem truly charmed.

WILLIAM CULLEN BRYANT (1794 - 1878) American poet, author of "Thanatopsis". Superb A.Q.S. 1p. 4to., New York, Jan. 1877. His poem "The Dead Patriarch", penned in full on a lined sheet, in part: "...Old Tree! Thy branches, fifty years ago, Thickset with leaf and spray...made a faint twilight on the ground below. And never ending murmurs overhead. But now, unheard the winds go wandering by, From the dead stem the boughs have dropped away, And on its summit, perched in middle sky, The clear eyed hawk sits watching for his prey. Henceforth, the softening rain and rending blast, Summer's fierce heat and winter's splintering col Shall slowly waste thee, till then lie at last, On the damp earth, a heap of yellow mould...". Boldly signed at conclusion. "The Dead Patriarch" was not published during Bryant's lifetime and appeared for the first time in Poetical Works by D. Appleton & Co., 1883. Mounted, weakened folds and marginal breaks, still good and ideal for restoration.
