      Lowcountry landscape depicting southern live oak trees, oil on board, signed and dated lower left "RJ Bryan 1979", wood frame with embossed leaf design; sight 21 3/8"W x 15 1/2"H; frame 25 1/4"W x 19 1/2"H; good condition---Bryan was born on John's Island, SC, and graduated from the Citadel. He studied painting and drawing under several artists including Alfred Hutty and Emma Gilchrist. (Ref. 112)

      Richard Jenkins Bryan (South Carolina, 1907-1986) COASTAL ROADSIDE & SWEET GRASS HARVESTERS oil on board, unframed, signed: lower right, R BRYAN H12" W16" Provenance: Private South Carolina Collection Other Notes: Bryan was born on John's Island in 1907 into a prominent South Carolina family. He spent a great deal of his life as an artist working around the coast of Charleston and its suburbs. As a student of Alfred Hutty he worked in charcoal drawing and studied oil painting under Emma Gilchrist. His work captured much of the rural low country and coastal life around the mid 20th century.
