              Jul. 13, 2024

De Bry - Brazil - How they danced with me before the hut where they had their idols, called Tammerka

              Est: $300 - $600

This enthralling engraving is from Theodor De Bry's significant historical work Grands Voyages. This from the first edition, Latin issue with this particular engraving being published in Frankfurt between 1590 and 1592 for de Bry by Sigismund Feyerabend. Grands Voyages is considered one of the most remarkable collections of voyages published in the Age of Discovery. Theodor de Bry (1528-1598) was a prominent Flemish engraver and publisher. He came from a family of jewelers and engravers, and faced persecution for his Lutheran faith during the Spanish Inquisition. De Bry would be most known for his engravings of the New World from Grands Voyages, a work which would reach 30 volumes in scope. He was inspired to create this work after meeting Richard Hakluyt in 1587, who had published his own collection of voyages. Hakluyt helped de Bry obtain paintings from the New World as well as giving him a copy of Hariot's Virginia. Many of the original paintings of America were done by Jacques Le Moynes de Morgues and John White then transferred to copper plates by de Bry. De Bry's landmark work depicted the early voyages and settlements in the Americas. His work greatly influenced the European view of the Americas for a long period of time. De Bry's prints provide an important contemporary view of European conquest and settlement in early America. The images depict native customs, culture and warfare, and episodes in the history of European contact with these natives and their world. As Michael Alexander said, De Bry's work "brought to the European public the first realistic visualization of the exotic world opened up across the Atlantic by the explorers, conquerors and settlers." (Discovering the New World, p. 7)

              Jul. 06, 2024

4 Theodor de Bry, Early Fla. & Va. Native American Prints

              Est: $400 - $500

Four (4) hand colored copperplate engravings of 16th century Native Americans of Colonial Florida and Virginia attributed to Theodor de Bry, c. 1591. Scenes include: Timucua Natives Collecting Gold in the Streams and Timuca Natives Gathering Food and Smoking Meat; The Chickahominy Become New Englishmen; and The Abduction of Pocahontas. All matted and framed under glass in differing giltwood frames. All have approximate sight dimensions of 5 1/2" H x 7 1/2" W and framed dimensions of 9 1/2" H x 11 1/2" W. Note: In 1591 Dutch engraver and goldsmith Theodor de Bry published GRAND VOYAGES, which contained the earliest known European images of Native Americans in what is now Florida, Northern Georgia, and Virginia. The book gave many Europeans their first ever visual impression of the landscapes and indigenous people of "the New World." De Bry never actually visited North America; his images were actually based on drawings by John White, an English artist who accompanied expeditions to Virginia, and Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues, who was part of the French expeditions to Florida in 1562 and 1564. PROVENANCE: Private Middle Tennessee collection.

De Bry & Le Moyne - Volume with 42 Engravings & Florida Map

              Est: $30,000 - $40,000

This significant, historic volume is Theodor de Bry & Jacques Le Moyne's Brevis Narratio eorum quae in florida Americae provi[n]cia Gallis acciderunt ... quae est seconda pars Americae. It is the second part or volume of Grands Voyages which is considered one of the most remarkable collections of voyages published in the Age of Discovery. The work was published in Frankfurt by Theodor de Bry. The work began publishing in 1590 with this volume printed 1609. The work includes engraved title, dedication leaf with engraved coat-of-arms, large hand-colored engraving of Noah's Ark, hand-colored section title, letterpress title (dated 1609), folding engraved map of Florida, 42 leaves with 1/2 page engraved illustration and text to page printed on recto only. The work is bound in modern morocco gilt. This is one of the most important volumes published on early North America. It features Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues's illustrations of Native Americans. The work described the earliest French settlements that would become the United States. The illustrations were after watercolors drawn first hand in the New World by Le Moyne on the mid-1560s expedition led by Jean Ribault and René Goulaine de Laudonnière. His illustrations of the Florida Indians are some of the most important visual records of American Indians and their culture before the 19th century. It also features one of the most important published maps of Florida. The map was first printed with this text and one of the most detailed of the Florida peninsula available before the 16th century. John Matthew Baxter describes it as "...the most remarkable and important map, which has been preserved from the sixteenth century maps, of that part of the East Coast which lies between Cape Hatteras and Cape Florida ... [It is] the first French map to show Florida ... [and is] considered the most important map of Florida." De Bry's prints provide an important contemporary view of European conquest and settlement in early America. The images depict native customs, culture and warfare, and episodes in the history of European contact with these natives and their world. As Michael Alexander said, De Bry's work "brought to the European public the first realistic visualization of the exotic world opened up across the Atlantic by the explorers, conquerors and settlers." [BRY, Theodor de (1528-1598). The Great Voyages, Part I, in Latin]. HARIOT, Thomas (1560-1621). Admiranda narratio fida tamen, de commodis et incolarum ritibus Virginiae. Frankfurt: Johannes Wechel for Theodor de Bry, 1590. De Bry’s Virginia with fine contemporary hand-coloring. First Latin edition of Part One of the Great Voyages; including the seminal map of Virginia “the most important and accurate depictions of North Americans published in the century after Columbus” (Creating America). The map, engraved after John White, is "one of the most significant cartographical milestones in colonial North American history, [and] the most accurate map drawn in the sixteenth century of any part of that continent" (Burden). White and the scientist and surveyor Thomas Hariot had both accompanied Sir Richard Grenville's original Virginia expedition in 1585. White became governor of the second colony there. Forced to return to England for supplies, White was delayed by the war with Spain: when he finally returned to Virginia in 1590, the colony had vanished. The extraordinary engravings, shared by all four original editions (French, Latin, English and German), were based on White's famous series of watercolor paintings, now in the British Museum. “De Bry also published five plates purporting to be ‘true pictures’ of the Picts, ancient inhabitants of England, to show that Britain had ‘in times past’ been occupied by men ‘as savvage as those of Virginia’ … De Bry’s engravings [of Native Americans] introduced a generation of Europeans to the people of America, and in his comparison of Virginians to Picts foreshadowed the development of modern anthropology. Artists and engravers cribbed freely from his illustrations throughout the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, often using them inappropriately to represent Native Americans from different regions and widely divergent cultures” (Creating America). The engravings in particular that show Native Virginian clothing and body decoration find their fullest expression in this hand-colored format. Copies of any of the volumes of the de Bry Voyages with fine contemporary coloring are extremely rare. The title page is first issue, with the printed overslip privilege statement, as is the other text and the majority of the engravings. Plates 4, 7, 9,11,12 and 15 are in Crawford's second issue. Alden and Landis 590⁄31; Burden 76; Church 140; Crawford, Collations and Notes No 3 Grands et Petits Voyages of de Bry, pp. 105-109; Creating America 81. Folio (315 x 237 mm). Engraved title-page, privilege statement on pasted-in slip, dedication to Maximilian I of Bavaria with his large engraved arms, double-page map of Virginia by Theodor de Bry after John White, 28 numbered engravings, ENGRAVED TITLE AND ENGRAVINGS FINELY COLORED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND, of which 17 are half-page with letterpress text, the remainder are full-page or larger, nos. 2-23 by G. Veen or T. de Bry after John White, the last 5 by and after T. de Bry; no. 1 showing Adam and Eve (by T. de Bry after T. de Winghe), no. 2 a birds-eye view of the area around Roanoke island showing the arrival of the English, nos. 3-23 depicting scenes of Native Virginian life, and nos. 24-28 showing the ancient Picts. Woodcut head- and tail-piece ornaments and initials, most lightly hand-colored. Blank leaf D6 present. (Right edge of title-leaf restored including loss to lower outer section of the architectural frame, scattered small repaired fold breaks or edge tears occasionally touching images, some offsetting or showthrough of coloring, 2 or 3 text leaves browned, occasional marginal soiling, engravings 13, 18, 20 and 22 slightly cropped, 18 and 20 with minor short tears along guards, engraving 13 with a small chip to lower left corner, a pea-sized loss to sky at head of gutter and descriptive text also shaved, slight dampstain to upper gutter margins of a few leaves, printing flaw to plate section title affecting a few words in bottom paragraph.) 17th-century German speckled sheep over pasteboard, spine tooled in blind (restorations to head and tail of spine, a corner of back cover and a few small spots of leather worn or gnawed away). 7)
