De BRY, Johann Theodore (1560-1623); Johann Israel de Bry (1565-1609) and Ulrich SCHMIDEL (ca. 1510-1579). Americae Pars VII. Ver[issim]a et iucund[issim]a descriptio praecipuarum quarundam Indiae Occidentalis... Frankfurt: Theodore de Bry, 1625. Second edition in Latin. Folio (14” x 9 1/2”). With an engraved allegorical title-page and four engraved vignettes. Bound in modern green morocco gilt, all edges gilt, by Pratt. In 1588, Theodor de Bry began his Grands Voyages, a multi-volume collection of the exploration of the Americas (the Petits Voyages treat Africa and Asia), such that each volume was stand-alone. De Bry’s Voyages are particularly sought-after (a full set sold for more than a quarter-million dollars in January 2024) for their rich illustrations. The present item is the seventh (of an eventual thirteen parts with two addenda), giving Schmidel’s account of his journey to Argentina and Paraguay. Schmidel accompanied the conquistador Pedro de Mendoza to Argentina where he fought for the colonisation of the Rio de la Plata. In 1546 he accompanied Irala on his expedition to Peru as far as the foot of the Andes. Church 162.

FIRST AND ONLY EDITION, FIRST ISSUE with plate XII of Amacao with six rocks in the upper left-hand corner and two water-carriers in the left-hand center margin. Containing accounts of five voyages made by the Dutch to the East Indies to counteract the influence of the Portuguese and Spaniards who had sought to establish themselves there. The first is an account of the second voyage of Jacob van Neck to the East Indies, from 1600-1604, during which he visited the islands of Ternate and Macao, and the city of Patane, in which he lost three fingers in a sea battle with a Spanish-Portuguese fleet near Ternate. "This made him decide that he had stretched his luck far enough and that he had better stay home" (Masselman page 116). The narrative of this voyage was written by Roelof Roelofsz and was translated by Artus for both the German and Latin editions of De Bry. The second is Jan Harmensz Bree's account of the voyage to the East Indies in 1602-1604, under the command of Admirals Sebald De Weert and Pietersz to Ceylon, where de Weert met his death at the hands of the Maharajah of Kandy. The third is a short account by Cornelis Clæsz of that part of the expedition which detached itself from the main fleet, under the command of Corneille Nicolas, and visited China. The fourth is the first published account of the voyage of two vessels under the command of Wibrandt van Warwijck to Bantam, east Java, Borneo, and on to China. And the fifth is an account of the second voyage of Steven van der Hagen to the islands of the Moluccas in 1603-1606, which was first published in Rotterdam in 1606. A HANDSOME SET OF DE BRY'S GREAT VOYAGES uniformly and finely bound in modern burgundy morocco gilt. Inspired by a meeting with the celebrated Richard Hakluyt in London in 1587, de Bry published the first of his own collection of voyages relating to the Americas in 1590: Hariot's account of Virginia. In order to maximize profit he had editions published in English, Latin, French and German. He went on to publish five further parts before his death in 1598, when his sons Johann Theodor and Johann Israel took over the task of completing the Great Voyages and began the Small Voyages, and oeuvre which eventually stretched to 25 volumes. Forty-four years passed between the publication of the first part of the Great Voyages and the last part of the Small Voyages, and it is therefore no wonder that sets like this one are made of a variety of editions and issues: "during this long interval, the publishers of this great collection must have reprinted, even more than once, the greater part of the volumes, which had become successively out of print; but, before coming to entire reimpressions, they would naturally use the portions either of text or of plates which were on hand. It appears, in fact, that the plates were at first printed only for a part of the two texts of the first volumes, and that, when this first impression was exhausted, it became necessary to have a second, and at the same time, to print on the pages destined to receive the engravings both the numbers indicating their order, and the titles or explanations, which appear above and below those engravings, and that, finally, when the text was entirely exhausted, they reprinted it, at first with the old date, and afterwards with a new date. This explains how it is that one encounters, besides the editions reprinted as a whole, copies of the first edition offspring so many various readings that one might think they belonged to different editions."
