      Nov. 16, 2024

      Ferdinand Brütt, Golgotha

      Est: €8,000 - €12,000

Signed and dated lower left: Ferd. Brütt 1895 Certificate Expert opinion by Dr Martin Hirschboeck, Berlin, 19.10.2022 In the 1890s, Ferdinand Brütt devoted himself to religious themes in a series of paintings. Although Christian painting plays a subordinate role in Brütt's œuvre, it is linked to his genre-like social paintings that touch on Christian aspects. This painting was probably inscribed by the artist himself on the stretcher top right with ‘Golgatha v. F. Brütt . 1895’. Brütt was already represented at the ‘Great Berlin Art Exhibition’ in 1900 with ‘Golgotha’as evidenced by the original exhibition label on the lower left of the stretcher. In a dramatic diagonal composition against a gloomy black and grey background, he shows a crucifixion group on the hill of Golgotha, an execution site near Jerusalem mentioned in the New Testament Gospels (Joh. 19,25-27). The crucified Jesus rises before a dark, black-grey sky, which only brightens above the crucified figure. A loose brushstroke, partly saturated with whitish yellow to orange paint, characterises the gestural and at the same time expressive painting style with which Brütt suggests a source of light illuminating the scene. The two co-crucified figures flanking Jesus are thus emphasised in the light. Mary and John are slumped at the foot of the cross, full of grief and despair. Lying backwards in the arms of the disciple John, who is turned towards her, Mary stretches out her hands in despair towards the Crucified One and heaven in an expressive gesture. In the background on the left, horsemen and foot soldiers are moving away and the other two Marys are depicted as sombre figures with lowered heads. This painting is particularly modern in its cropped composition, which aims for an immediate effect, and its Impressionist style. The œuvre of Ferdinand Brütt, who stylistically distanced himself from the contemporary history and genre painting of the Düsseldorf School of Painting, can be appropriately viewed and evaluated in the artistic context of the well-known Impressionists Liebermann, Slevogt and Corinth.

      Brütt, Ferdinand

      Est: €1,800 - €2,700

Brütt, Ferdinand 1849 Hamburg - 1936 Bergen. «Durch Nacht zum Licht (through night to light)». Around 1903. Oil on canvas. Signed lower right and inscribed «Cbg». Verso on the stretcher titled as well as inscribed «v. F. Brütt» presumably by a different hand. H 60,5, W 76 cm (support). Framed. As a study after the painting «Christus Victor» from 1894 also known as «Was toben die Heiden (why do the heathens rage)», in which Christ as a figure of light brings the striking workers' society to their senses, we see a similar scene in the present work. It is interesting to note the «moral pointing finger» of the light figure, as this also plays an important role in Brütt's court paintings, a genre that he strongly influenced. Exhibition: Ferdinand Brütt (1849 - 1936), Erzählung und Impression, Museum Giersch, Frankfurt a.M., 18.03. - 15.07.2007, p. 117, No. 66. Literature: Alexander Bastek, Ferdinand Brütt und das städtisch-bürgerliche Genre um 1900, Weimar 2007, p. 222, No. 1903.11. Catalogue raisonné: Bastek 1903.11. Condition report: Good overall impression. Margins slightly rubbed from framing, faint white shrinking cracks lower middle, several spots of retouching mainly in the area of the margins, small spots of paint loss (approx. 2 mm to 1 cm) middle left and upper right. DEUTSCH: Brütt, Ferdinand 1849 Hamburg - 1936 Bergen. «Durch Nacht zum Licht». Um 1903. Öl auf Leinwand. U.r. sign. und bez. «Cbg». Ausstellung: Ferdinand Brütt (1849 - 1936), Erzählung und Impression, Museum Giersch, Frankfurt a.M., 18.03. - 15.07.2007, S. 117, Kat.Nr. 66. Bildränder rahmungsbedingt leicht ber., Mitte u. schwache Frühschwundrisse, mehrere Retuschen überwiegend im Bereich der Bildränder, Mitte l. und o.r. kl. Farbfehlstellen (ca. 2 mm bis 1 cm).

      Est: €4,000 - €5,000

Signed and dated lower left: F. Brütt Cbg. 03 This portrait-format depiction of the choir stalls of Mainz Cathedral is strongly linked to a landscape-format rendering of the same subject with almost identical dimensions housed in a private collection (cf. exhib. cat. "Ferdinand Brütt (1849-1936) - Erzählung und Impression", Museum Giersch, Frankfurt, 18.3.-15.7. 2007, Petersberg 2007, cat. no. 65, illus. p. 116). The depiction of the stained glass windows using pastose brushstrokes in vivid colours is particularly charming.
