    • Paul Theodor van Brussel (Dutch, 1754-1795)
      Sep. 18, 2024

Paul Theodor van Brussel (Dutch, 1754-1795)

      Est: £10,000 - £15,000

Paul Theodor van Brussel (Dutch, 1754-1795) Still life with fruit, flowers, a birds nest with a fly, lizard and grasshopper signed lower centre 'P T v Brussel f.' and again indistinctly lower right oil on canvas 51 x 39.5cm The highly decorative and colourful nature of this painting probably reflect the artist’s initial training in tapestry and wall painting. Nevertheless, the inclusion of the fly, often symbolising decay, and the lizard, symbolising death, add a darker element to the picture and place it within the strong Dutch tradition of ‘vanitas’ still life painting, which often used such symbols to subtly suggest the transience of life and certainty of death. Unfortunately, this was brutally true for van Brussel, who drowned ice skating at the age of 41.

    • PAUL THEODOR VAN BRUSSEL OIL, A STILL LIFE OF SUMMER FLOWERS
      Jan. 27, 2024

PAUL THEODOR VAN BRUSSEL OIL, A STILL LIFE OF SUMMER FLOWERS

      Est: $50,000 - $70,000

VAN BRUSSEL, Paul Theodor (Dutch, 1754-1795). A Still Life of Summer Flowers, Roses, Carnations, Tulips and Peonies in a terra cotta figural urn on a stone ledge with a nest of eggs and with butterflies. Oil on canvas. Signed lower right: "P. T. van Brussel" 28" x 25" canvas, 25 1/4" x 31" framed. Paul Theodor van Brussel's opulent bouquet typifies the late Dutch style in flower painting. The magnificent flowers cascade over the plinth upon which they are arranged, leading the viewer's eye to the nest of eggs unsteadily perched at the edge of the stone ledge. Each sumptuous bloom sways at the end of an elegantly meandering stem, stimulating visual interest and creating an ever-moving composition. Yet within this image of perfection is hidden reality. The fly and butterfly remind us of the transience of natural beauty while at the same time giving the composition vitality. Born at Zuid Polsbroek, Holland, Brussel was a pupil of Jan Augustini at Haarlem. His first employment was in designing and painting wallpapers, but after his marriage in 1774, the artist turned to the creation of fruits and flower paintings. As can be seen in this example, he found inspiration in the works of Jan van Huysum. Brussel later lived at Amsterdam where he died at the age of forty-one, it is said by drowning.

Please note the exact Buyer’s Premium charges which can be found in the Conditions of Sale in the Terms below. (Zuid-Polsbroek 1764–1795 Amsterdam) Flowers, fruit and a corn on the cob on a table ledge, signed and dated lower left: P. T. van Brussel/1786, oil on panel, 74 x 57 cm, framed Provenance: with Richard Green, 1996; where bought by the present owner The present picture, with its broken corn stalk, set against masterfully executed and intense floral hues is a thoughtful vanitas, showing the still life painter Theodor van Brussel at the height of his powers, towards the end of his mature period, Van Brussel’s choice of arrangements, handled with extraordinarily naturalistic detail and the composed pyramidal structure exhibit the influence of Jan van Huysum (1682-1747). Along with Jan van Os, van Brussel carried on the most thoughtful refinements of van Huysum’s style up to the end of the 18th Century. The cycle of life in the present work is completed by delicate details such as the bee and flies, coupled with an ear of corn, motifs redolent of an earlier work, signed and dated 1787 in The Art Institute of Chicago (inv. no. 1948.569). Despite the relative rarity of autograph works by van Brussel, his popularity in his own time and immediately following his death is evidenced by a pair of still lifes by the artist being inventoried in the collection of King Willem II of The Netherlands. Johan Christian Roedig, who may have been the artist’s pupil, imitated several of his compositions.
