The two portraits offered here are later copies after the original paintings executed in 1780 while the artist was still living in his native Vaud. Depicting an upper-class couple of that region who were his patrons, they were the artist's earliest known equestrian portraits, which became the pattern for a number of similar images of the Royal Family and higher nobility of France, including two magnificent equestrian portraits of Marie-Antoinette, one of which is still at Versailles. (40.6 x 53.4 cm.) a pair (2) PROVENANCE (Probably) Me Gustave Martin, Geneva. Anon. Sale, Sotheby's, Zurich, 27 November 1984, lots 9 and 10. LITERATURE A. de Herdt and L. de La Rochefoucauld, Louis-Auguste Brun, Geneva, 1986, p. 103, nos. 24-5, illustrated p. 40, as circa 1788. EXHIBITION Geneva, Mus‚e d'art et d'histoire, 1986, no. 25. NOTES The present works, although of slightly different proportions, should be regarded as a pair, and are described as such by de Herdt ( loc. cit.). This is further borne out by the fact that the falcon depicted on the first canvas and the hare on the second are found together (the former swooping on the latter) in Brun's La chasse au faucon of circa 1788. That work - one of the artist's chefs-d'oeuvre and an important example of Brun's admiration for the work of Philips Wouwerman - was described with enthusiasm by the critic Rigaud in 1876: 'J'ai vu de Brun plusieurs tableaux qui furent mis en vente aprŠs la sa mort; je fus particuliŠrement frapp‚ d'une "Chasse au faucon", au milieu d'une campagne br–l‚e par un soleil ardent. Tout amateur aurait ‚t‚ heureux d'avoir ce tableau dans son cabinet.'.

NOTES Although of French origin, Brun's family lived at Rolle in Switzerland, where he was trained by local painters. In 1780 he went to Turin, but on the recommendation of Victor-Am‚d‚e of Savoy he left for Paris in 1781. He entered the studio of J.B.M. Pierre but quickly moved on to work for the Duc de Luynes. In 1783 he was presented to King Louis XVI and Queen Marie-Antoinette, who hired him to paint the Hunts of the King. By 1786 he began to teach painting to the Queen and the King's sister. In 1789-1790 he returned to Switzerland and bought a house in Versoix on the French side of the frontier. The present drawings were executed around 1788 and show various angles of the classical buildings of the stables at Chantilly. The large door is the entrance to the m‚nagerie.
