      Est: €3,000 - €4,000

Signed lower left: Ferd. "Ferdinand Brütt (1849-1936) - Erzählung und Impression", Museum Giersch, Frankfurt, 18.3.-15.7. 2007, Petersberg 2007, p. 24, illus. 6, and p. 25 & 203). Brütt painted this Rococo scene during his early years in Düsseldorf. Three years prior to this he painted another work, also currently lost, depicting the same staircase with different figures (cf. exhib. cat. "Ferdinand Brütt" op. cit. p. 202, illus. 80).

Signed and dated lower left: F. "Ferdinand Brütt (1849-1936) - Erzählung und Impression", Museum Giersch, Frankfurt, 18.3.-15.7. 2007, Petersberg 2007, cat. no. 65, illus. p. 116). The depiction of the stained glass windows using pastose brushstrokes in vivid colours is particularly charming.

      Ferdinand Brütt, The Telltale Study

      Est: €20,000 - €30,000

Signed and dated lower left: Ferd. Brütt. Weimar 75 With a label on the stretcher with a printed inscription "Ferdinand Brütt" and handwritten addition: ""Die verrätherische Studie" / von [printed: Ferdinand Brütt] / Weimar." The sale of the "Verräterische Studie" marks the reappearance of one of the earliest major works by the Hamburg painter Ferdinand Brütt, the whereabouts of which remained unknown for many years. The composition was mainly known from early publications in the "Leipziger Illustrierte Zeitung" of 1877 and the magazine "Meisterwerke der Holzschneidekunst" (Masterpieces of Woodcutting) of 1879, where the content of the picture was already explained: according to this, the imperious farmer sees a sketch depicting his daughter in an interior. The fact that the daughter, who is sitting dismayed on a chair, and the painter of the sketch, who has already fled the room, are having an affair is revealed to the strict father by the "Telltale Study" left behind. This early genre scene by Brütts shows "the decisive moment of a narrative and encourages the viewer to add what happened before or what will follow afterwards" (Alexander Bastek, in exhib. cat., op. cit., p. 24). The painting was created during the young artist's training in Weimar, when, after an apprenticeship as a lithographer in Hamburg, he was a student of the Belgian history painter Ferdinand Pauwels at the Grand Ducal School of Art from 1870. In the course of the important Brütt exhibition at the Museum Giersch in Frankfurt in 2007, which had come to the attention of the owner of the "Telltale Study", the painting could be shown there for the first time, whereby it was too late to include it in the exhibition catalogue, which had already been printed at the time. Now the work, dated 1875, is appearing at auction for the first time, providing a rare direct insight into Ferdinand Brütt's early genre painting, which was still characterised by humour and satire.

FERDINAND BRÜTT, DIFFICULT ELECTION (URWÄHLER) DIFFICULT ELECTION (URWÄHLER) Signed lower right: F. Brütt This piece is a study for the painting "Schwere Wahl", which was already purchased by the Städtische Galerie Magdeburg a year after its creation (cf. exhib. cat. "Ferdinand Brütt 1849-1936. Erzählung und Impression", Frankfurt 2007, p. 235, no. 1886.1, fig. 7, p. 25). As the painting has been lost since WWII, this study holds particular importance for the motif, although it shows a number of variations to the finished work. For example the slightly leant over man in the left edge of the image was left out of the painting, as was the chandelier, which was replaced with a modern version, and some of the faces, gestures and figures were also changed slightly. Both the lost painting and the study were carried out during Ferdinand Brütt's time in Düsseldorf, and present a fine example of the artist's more humorous works.

FERDINAND BRÜTT, IN FRONT OF THE JUDGES, oil on canvas, 80 x 115 cm

Verso most likely written by the artist himself: Vor den Richtern F. Brütt (Before the Judges) Exhibition Label Munich Glaspalast No. 1164 (year?) In Germany, Brütt was possibly the first painter of both commercial and social life in stock exchanges, banks and law courts in the city. He was most successful with his court paintings in which he combined realistic aspects with the impressionistic tendencies of the time. This painting belongs to a series of court pictures that Brütt created in the 1890's, among which is the large-scale work "Die Stunde der Entscheidung im Gerichtssaal" (The Hour of Decision in the Court of Law) (100x140cm), dated 1892 and belonging to the Neue Pinakothek, Munich, since its purchase during the Glaspalast exhibition of the same year. The court paintings are based upon Brütt's jury duties and are well-observed documents of the time. His interests however are also directed towards purely aesthetic qualities such as the play of light in the interior and its artistic possibilities. Ferdinand Brütt was born in Hamburg in 1849. After his schooling in Hamburg and Weimar, he settled in Düsseldorf in 1876 where he remained until 1898. During that year he joined the artistic community in Kronberg/Taunus.
