William Blair Bruce (Canadian, 1859-1906) Skulptören Ville Vallgrens hus i Finla

        Est: $8,000 - $12,000

William Blair Bruce (Canadian, 1859-1906) Skulptören Ville Vallgrens hus i Finland (The Finnish home of sculptor Ville Vallgrens), 1904 Oil on canvas 14 x 10-3/4 inches (35.6 x 27.3 cm) PROVENANCE: The artist; Professor Carl and Mrs. Cecilia Benedicks, probably bequeathed from the wife of the above, 1906; Thence by descent; Bukowskis, Stockholm, December 11, 2019, lot 419; Private collection, Ridgway, Colorado, acquired from the above. William Blair Bruce was one of Canada's first impressionist painters. His association with the present collection of Nordic art stems from his marriage to Swedish sculptor, Carolina Benedicks, and spent most of his life in Europe, both in France where he had trained, and on the Swedish island of Gotland, where he and Carolina (who was wealthy and socially prominent) built a large house, Brucebo, which became an important gathering place for artists. The present work betrays the strong influence of the work of American impressionist Theodore Robinson, an artist with whom Bruce became very close friends when they shared a house and painted together at Monet's Giverny in 1887. The high-keyed palette, banishment of black, and direct patchy application of the paint, all without underpainting, reveal Bruce's painterly confidence. The colorful work is also an important document, recording a view of the home of Finnish sculptor Ville Valgren (1855-1940) in Porvoo, on the Gulf of Finland. Following Bruce's sudden death in Stockholm at age 47, his wife Carolina donated 29 of his paintings to his hometown, the city of Hamilton, Ontario. This gift became the foundation of the Art Gallery of Hamilton that opened in 1914. HID01801242017
