Patrick Henry Bruce Sold at Auction Prices

Still life painter, Landscape painter, Porträtmaler, Painter, b. 1881 - d. 1936

(b 1881; d 1936) One of the pioneers of American modernism, Patrick Henry Bruce was part of a circle of American artists who gathered around Gertrude and Leo Stein and Henri Matisse in Paris at the end of the 20th century’s first decade. Those relationships, together with his own intensive study of Cezanne’s late paintings, led to a style of art in which Bruce explored the implications both of Matisse’s color and of Cezanne’s space. Later in his career, he began experimenting with abstract still-lifes composed of geometric shapes, which he created using mechanical tools such as a compass and scale. Bruce’s art was largely ignored during his lifetime however and he eventually gave up painting, destroying much of his own work, before taking his own life in 1936.

Patrick Henry Bruce American, (1881 - 1937) objects on a table, abstract still life oil on canvas "P.H. Bruce" written on the stretcher verso. Biography from the Archives of askART: The following was written and submitted by Jean Ershler Schatz, artist and researcher from Laguna Woods, California. Patrick Henry Bruce was the great-great-great grandson of the patriot Patrick Henry and was one of the most mysterious figures in American 20th century art and one of the first American abstract painters. He was born in Long Island, Virginia in 1881, the son of Virginia gentlefolk. He came to New York in 1901 to study with William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri. Like so many of his peers he went to Paris, but unlike most of them, he remained in France. His early work, many of them portraits, reflected the influence of his American teachers, especially Henri. But by 1907, he was beginning to show the effects of modernism including the bright colors of Renoir. He met Matisse in 1908 and began studying with him, thereby completing the transformation to abstraction. Bruce and his wife, Helen, socialized with many of the leading intellectuals such as Gertrude and Leo Stein, Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp and Matisse. But Bruce was an ambitious, austere and obsessive figure who lived and worked with almost no public recognition and destroyed much of his work before he destroyed himself. His paintings moved inexorably toward a very personal vision of ideal order, form and structure. He experimented with all forms; his still lifes of 1910 until 1912 were influenced by Cezanne, his "Compositions" of 1916 captured the fevered, jazzy tensions of Paris. The still lifes Bruce painted over and over again for the rest of his life. They did not sell and he was becoming more morose and withdrawn. His wife Helen left him and took their twelve-year-old son with her in 1919. Bruce remained in Paris, eking out a living dealing in antiques. He returned to New York and committed suicide at the age of fifty-five in a New York hotel room. Sources include: Newsweek Magazine, September 3, 1979 From the internet, Artchive.com

Cable, Modern American Painting 1907-1936: The Maria and Barry King Collection, exhibition catalogue, El Paso Museum of Art, El Paso, Texas, 2013, pp. 41-44, no. 9, illustrated. According to Dr. Patrick Shaw Cable, "Unfortunately the master colorist Patrick Henry Bruce committed suicide at age fifty-five and destroyed much of his work, so that only about one hundred of his paintings remain. "From an old Southern family and a descendant of American statesman Patrick Henry, twenty-year-old Bruce moved from Long Island, Virginia, to New York, where he studied with William Merritt Chase and then Robert Henri. In 1903 he went to Paris...[where he] met Matisse and other artists by way of the regular Saturday salons held at the home of Gertrude Stein and her brother, Leo. By 1912 he was associating closely with the Orphists Robert and Sonia Delaunay, and remained in Paris until 1936. During the 1910s Bruce was a noted modernist figure, exhibiting at the Salons d'Automne and the Salons des Independants, and showing four works back at home in the 1913 Armory Show. The same year he was only one of four Americans--the others being Lyonel Feininger, Albert Bloch, and Marsden Hartley--invited to participate in Berlin's Grand Survey of Modern Art, at the Erster Deutscher Herbstsalon. Three years later the artist had a solo exhibition in the United States at the Montross Gallery. Ultimately, however, Bruce found limited support for his work...The painter's self-criticism, his frustration with the misunderstanding of his works, and his 1919 separation with his wife left him increasingly reclusive. Abandoning art altogether and moving to Versailles in 1933, he returned to New York in 1936 and took his own life a few months later. Art historian M. Sue Kendall has succinctly divided Bruce's oeuvre into four periods. Accordingly, his first phase lasted until about 1907 and reflected the influence of Robert Henri in its bravura brushwork and deep tonalities; this was followed by a five-year period dominated by still lifes illustrating the artist's appreciation of Cézanne and Matisse. Next, until about 1920, Bruce produced hard-edged abstractions influenced by Orphism; and the last period before his death was marked by Cubist still lifes based on architectural themes. "Floral Still Life belong(s) within Bruce's second period, when he began to study with Matisse in 1908 and then by the next year was attracted to Cézanne. In his classic text on early modernism, Abraham A. Davidson offered a brief yet nuanced description of Bruce's dialogue with Matisse and Cézanne, noting that by 1909 the painter had replaced his enthusiasm for Matisse by 'an even greater one for Cézanne-or, more properly, Cézanne as seen through the eyes of Matisse.' "Floral Still Life, which may have been one of the artist's pictures in the Armory Show...utilizes areas of unpainted canvas...in a limited fashion as part of its overall Cézannesque structuring. The light-hued painting is a fine illustration of the notion of Bruce's seeing Cezanne through Matisse's eyes" (Modern American Painting 1907-1936: The Maria and Barry King Collection, exhibition catalogue, El Paso Museum of Art, El Paso, Texas, 2013, pp. 41-42).

Patrick Henry Bruce - American Modernist: A Catalogue Raisonne. New York: The Art Publishers, Inc., 1979, B60, p. 176, illus. This is among the "foliage" paintings Bruce created in the summer of 1912, while staying in Belle Ile, France. His source material derived from the dense vegetation surrounding his house. His wife, Helen Bruce, wrote to Gertrude Stein of "great bushes of geraniums-almost to my shoulders." Bruce modeled his images on the later watercolors of Cezanne. William C. Agee notes in Patrick Henry Bruce: American Modernist (1979) that Bruce drew especially from Cezanne's Fruits et feuillages of 1890-94 (Venturi 613), which was owned by Matisse. Agee commented of these works: "While they retain the distinctive shapes of the foliage, they verge on abstract curtains of dense, rich, and closely gradated color volumes. They are part of Bruce's drive toward a density and fullness of structure that had increasingly characterized his work, beginning in about mid-1911 (17-18). C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC

This still life belongs to Patrick Henry Bruce's early Paris years, from 1904 to 1912, when he was intensively exploring the work of the modern masters, especially that of Matisse, with whom he studied--he is known as "one of the early and most ardent Matisse pupils." It was Matisse who encouraged Bruce to examine the late still lifes of Cézanne, leading him to develop a knowledge of these works that has been described as "encyclopedic" (William C. Agee in Patrick Henry Bruce: American Modernist, 1979, p. 16). The Bruce catalogue raisonné states of this work: "The painting marks Bruce's full engagement with Cezanne, a fascination that grew unabated until late 1912 and that in the most profound sense lay at the heart of his late geometric still lifes. Bruce chose to exhibit a painting of this type in the 1910 Salon d'Automne, the first work he had exhibited since the fall of 1907. A specific Cézanne prototype can be found in Fleurs dans un vase vert, c. 1883-87 (Venturi 511)." (pp. 159-60) Along with a great number of Bruce's works, this painting was in the collection of the interior decorator and art consultant William Kennedy of Marigot, St. Martin, who along with Benjamin Franklin Garber carried on the efforts of Bruce's widow Mrs. Helen Kibbey Bruce and his champion, the French journalist and connoisseur Henri-Pierre Roche to preserve his art. Bruce received little recognition in the art world of his time; it was not until the 1970s that Bruce's life and art became known, through the efforts of the scholars William Agee and Barbara Rose. This painting is signed but not dated, which was Bruce's practice. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC
