Condition B / B+: extensively overpainted margins; repaired tears and restoration at edges and in image. The New York Central Lines began using posters as advertisements in 1925. This poster was the second one they ever issued. It is "a powerfully evocative depiction of California's distinctive golden hills aglow in sunset hues" (Zega p. 68). This "Western wanderlust" became a major theme in the posters of all different rail lines, in which the paradise that was California was used to sell train tickets. Brubaker "was well known for his 'color harmony and tone quality.' A California resident who was best known for his interpretation of California subjects, his work was often included in the New York Art Directors Club's annual exhibition" (ibid). Condition B+: minor creases and restoration in margins and image; sharp crease in central image; minor repaired tears at edges; repaired pin holes in corners. "In 1919, at the urging of Franklin K. Mathiews, librarian of the Boy Scouts of America, Book Week was introduced to focus attention on the need for quality children's books and the importance of childhood literacy" (http://www.cbcbooks.org/about/history.html). The poster for the first year, designed by Jessie Wilcox Smith, was reused through 1924, when the artist designed a second image. In 1925, Brubaker designed this image, which was also used in 1926. Brubaker also did work for the New York Central Lines. He was awarded the Art Directors Club gold medal for poster design for this image. Modern American 33, Book Week p. 5.
