    (American/Virginia, 1823-1894) Portrait of George B. Anderson, Cavalry Brigadier General of the Confederate States, 1862, signed verso "Wm G. Browne pinxt Nov 1862", oil on canvas, 36 x 29 in.; period gilt wood and molded plaster frame, 48 x 41 in. Note: Born on April 12, 1831 in Orange County, North Carolina, Anderson was a career soldier. He is among six generals killed or mortally wounded at the Battle of Antietam in September of 1862. He died in 1862 at the age of 31, in Raleigh, North Carolina His portrait has hung in the Hall ancestral home of the consignor in Belmont North Carolina since the 19th Century.     (1823-1883) Temporary Confederate brigadier general and Secretary of State, personal aid to Jefferson Davis. War date A.L.S. on official C.S.A. Executive Department letterhead, 1p. 4to., Richmond, Dec. 22, 1863, to Confederate president Jefferson Davis recommending a military appointment. In part: '...permit me especially to recommend for cadet appointment...Stevens Dent of Athens...has been commended for gallantry and good conduct by his battalion and company commander...Dent is formally known to me as a young man of good education and intelligence and belongs to a very worthy and patriotic family...' He further mentions that Dent is recommended by generals P. M. B. Young and Wade Hampton. Trimmed at the left margin affecting some words, else fine.
