    SAMUEL JOSEPH BROWN (1907 - 1994) Writing Lesson. Lithograph on cream wove paper, 1937. 219x193 mm; 8 5/8x7 5/8 inches, full margins. Signed and titled in pencil, lower margin. Published by Works Progress Administration (WPA), Federal Art Project, Philadelphia. Additional impressions are in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Born in Wilmington, NC, Samuel Joseph Brown studied at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the School of Industrial Art (now the University of the Arts) and received a Master of Arts equivalent degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He began teaching for the Philadelphia public school system in 1938, and was there for over 35 years. Brown participated in the Federal Art Project of the WPA from 1933 - 1948, and his work was praised by Eleanor Roosevelt.

A very good impression of this very scarce, modernist print. Born in Wilmington, NC, Samuel Joseph Brown studied at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and taught in Philadelphia public schools for 35 years. He participated in the WPA from 1933-1948, and his work was praised by Eleanor Roosevelt. He also made color screenprints for the One World project, to show the harmony which could exist in integrated schools.

    SAMUEL J. BROWN, JR. (1907 - 1994) Still Life. Watercolor, 1958. 520x340 mm; 20 1/2x13 1/2 inches. Signed and dated in watercolor, twice, lower right. Ex-collection: estate of the artist, Philadelphia; private collection, Philadelphia. This floral watercolor is a beautiful mid-career work by one of the WPA's great watercolor artists. Born in Wilmington, NC, Samuel Joseph Brown lived and worked in Philadelphia through most of his career. He received an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania after studying at the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art from 1926-1930. He taught in Philadelphia public schools for 35 years. He also participated in the WPA from 1933-35, producing numerous watercolors which were praised by Eleanor Roosevelt at the time. His watercolors were also exhibited at the Harmon Foundation, New York, and the Barnett-Aden Gallery, Washington, DC.

    SAMUEL J. BROWN (1907-1994) Little Girl. Woodcut on thin Japan paper, 1935. 250x200 mm; 9 7/8x7 7/8 inches, wide (full ?) margins. Signed, dated, numbered 45/45 and inscribed "Imp" in pencil, lower margin. A very good, dark impression of this very scarce print. Provenance: James A. Porter; hence by descent to his daughter, Constance Porter-Uzelac. This is only the second known print by this artist to come to auction; the first sold at Swann Galleries on February 28, 2002.     9.25" x 6.5", signed and dated. Sam Brown was an African-American artist working in the Philadelphia area. He studied at the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Arts, and exhibited from the 1920s-40s at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, Harmon Fund, Howard University, and the Museum of Modern Art. He also exhibited in Chicago at the Southside Community Center (1941), where many well known Chicago African-American artists exhibited there work.
