John George Brown Sold at Auction Prices

Genre Painter, Porträtmaler, Artist, b. 1831 - d. 1913

Artist John George Brown (1831-1913) was an American Victorian-era painter, etcher, and lithographer. He is best known for his stylized, sentimental genre oils on canvas of entrepreneurial street urchins, most notably boys who shined shoes, sold newspapers, and played music. John George Brown's paintings also include rosy-cheeked girls at play.

As an artist, John George Brown was wildly popular with the public because he idealized the cheery, impish, robust street boys; these were the days before Jacob Riis' photographic revelations about New York's slums. John George Brown's prints of picturesque youths sold in the thousands. With his commercial success, Brown went on to paint landscapes that were much more colorful, crisp, and detailed than his genre art. Collect sets of classic genre paintings for sale by perusing offerings at online galleries.

John George Brown, New York/California (1831-1913), Cheer Up, 1905, oil on canvas

    Est: $12,000 - $18,000

John George Brown New York/California, (1831-1913) Cheer Up, 1905 oil on canvas signed and dated lower left, gilt-framed. Brown was born and raised in poverty in Durham, England, where he worked as an apprentice in the field of glassworks, eventually moving to Brooklyn at age 22 (in 1853) where he found a job at the Brooklyn Flint Glass Company. He ended up marrying the daughter of the owner of the factory, and his father-in-law supported him as a painter. Unlike the socially critical work of his contemporaries including Jacob Riis, Lewis Hine or Theodore Dreiser who depicted the harsh reality of life on the streets for the tens of thousands of poor homeless kids left to fend for themselves across New York City, Brown chose to depict these same young street urchins as cheerful, healthy, clean and happy young business people. He focused on paperboys, dock hands, flower sellers, match vendors and those who shined shoes--which earned him the nickname "the bootblack Raphael." His allegorical message seemed to promote the ideal of the American self-made man, the confirmation of how hard work and personal responsibility were the basis of American life. Here we have a young smiling boy who has left the tools of his shoe shining trade (various brushes, a circular container of shoe wax, a bottle of shoe oil, a little broom, and a rag) carefully laid out on the floor in front of him as he takes a break to pat his cute little dog. The boy is seated on his own shoe shine box and next to a larger wooden crate that appear to have been artificially placed within the artist's studio--rather than out on a street corner where the artist probably came across this young model for his painting. Brown included the boy's own worn and tattered boots and stockings, an authentic element within an otherwise idealized portrait of a young immigrant child left to his own devices on the streets of New York. Brown's positive and sentimental depictions of street children become incredibly popular in his own time, ironically making him wealthy and famous for his work based on unknown strays and orphans.

    John George Brown (1831 - 1913), Can’t Raise the Wind, 1867.

    Est: $30,000 - $40,000

Oil on canvas. 18 1/4 x 14 1/4 in. Can’t Raise the Wind pictures a recognizable moment from childhood: there isn’t enough wind to fly a kite. Brown’s composition of the small band of children playing outside is delightful as it is detailed: from the downtrodden expression on the boys’ faces to the echarpe and full skirt the little girl in the background is wearing, there are many clues to what urban life was like for these children. Brown himself grew up middle class in England as the son of a lawyer father who did not want him to become an artist, and sympathized deeply with children like himself, as evidenced by his nuanced way of depicting them. Brown’s yellow-brown tones across the painting gives a lightly melancholic feel to the fall scene, which is then offset by the litany of colors on the children’s clothing and kites. Brown was an expert on including a full range of color in his paintings and still preserving the overall tonality – in Can’t Raise the Wind, the reds, greens and blues are wonderfully balanced with the brick, concrete and stone of the urban scene. This is a painting in excellent condition with rich colors and lively varnish.
