Provenance: - Kasper König Collection (directly from artist) Exhibitions: - Frankfurter Kunstverein Steinernes Haus, Frankfurt a.M. 1985-86 "One of the basic everyday activities of human beings is to cover distances and move from one place to another. Starting in 1960, stanley brouwn's work concentrated on this activity. The rapidly sketched felt-tip drawings describe routes. brouwn asked people on the street how to get from A to B, requesting that they show him by drawing a map. Each drawing is personal; some are geometrical, while others use soft, flowing lines. brouwn stamped each drawing with the phrase "this way brouwn." brouwn challenged the concept of authorship by delegating the production of drawings to people chosen randomly from the crowd. He also questioned the idea of artistic style by placing a stamp on the drawing where an artist's signature would usually appear. Stapled booklet, black wrapper with white silkscreened title, 15 x 21.5 cm, 32 pp. Tatvan (spelled Tatvan in title, but Tatwan in the rest of the text) is a location in Turkey where a railway line ends abruptly. brouwn travelled to Tatvan to make photographs he did not publish. Instead, the booklet features a number of conceived distances to the site: x-Tatwan 1 km; x - Tatwan 1000 km (etc.). Cover features indentation of the underlying staple, interior mint.

Softcover, 19.4 x 19.6 cm, 48 pp. Artists' book published on the occasion of brouwn's exhibition in which arrows were drawn on the floor, the visitors were invited to walk a few meters in the direction of several cities. The book features 21 directional indications, such as 'walk 95 m in the direction of la paz, walk 11 m in the direction of rangoon, walk 4 m in the direction of madrid'. Light scratches on the black wrappers (only visible with specific light fall), tiny corner bump, else a very good copy.

Black ink stamped on paper, 29.6 x 21 cm, folded once horizontally. Featured are two black rubber stamp impressions made by stanley brouwn (1935-2017) with the text 'USE THIS LIGHT'. Rare multiple made in an unknown and small edition. This copy originally derives from brouwn's friend Tomas Schmit, who apparently received several copies from the artist meant for generous distribution. A very well-preserved copy.

Schiedam, Stedelijk Museum, 1970. -- Einzige Ausgabe des anlässlich der Ausstellung in Schiedam erschienenen Künstlerbuches. Der Konzeptkünstler Stanley Brouwn, (geb. 25. Juni 1935 in Paramaribo, gest. 18. Mai 2017 in Amsterdam) zog 1957 in die Niederlande. Bis Anfang der 1960er Jahre war er als Aktionskünstler tätig, in den 1960er Jahren beteiligte er sich an der internationalen Fluxus-Bewegung. Von 1960 bis 1964 entstand die This way Brouwn Serie, ein konzeptuelles Künstlerbuch mit gestempelten Skizzen zu Wegbeschreibungen, die ihm Amsterdamer Passanten aufzeichneten. Stunning portfolio by key Dutch conceptual artist Stanley Brouwn (1935-2017). Grey portfolio, 25 x 33 cm. Contains 10 original works featuring footprints on off-white paper. 24.5 x 30 cm each. All signed S. Brouwn in pen in lower right corner. The series dates from 1960 and is also known as Passanten (Passers-by). Very good copies. Extremely rare large series, one of which is held at the Moma/ Art & Project collection in New York. The artist described the work as follows: Brouwn scatters blank sheets of paper on the sidewalks of Amsterdam. Passers-by on their way from A to B who cross Brouwn's route, leave their footprints on the sheets of paper. Brouwn later collects these pieces of paper.
