Antique American Trent Tile by Isaac Broome. Girl and Parrot. Good condition with overall crazing and small fleabites to 1 edge. Manufactured by Trent Tile Works of Trenton, NJ. Measures 6"x6"x1/2". Weight An American sculptor, ceramic modeler and teacher, Isaac Broome (1836-1922) was educated at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, where he was elected an Academician in 1860 and taught in the Life and Antique department from 1860 to 1863. In 1854 he assisted Thomas Crawford with the statues on the pediment of the Senate wing of the US Capitol in Washington, DC, and tried unsuccessfully to establish a firm for architectural terracotta and garden ornaments in Pittsburgh and New York. Beginning in 1875, Broome was employed as a modeler by Trenton's Ott & Brewer pottery. The parian porcelain sculpture he created for their display at the Centennial International Exhibition of 1876 in Philadelphia won medals for ceramic arts. Following his success at the Exhibition and at the Exposition Universelle of 1878 in Paris, for which he was appointed USA Special Commissioner, he was active as a teacher and lecturer and was keenly interested in educational, political and industrial reforms. He also continued as a modeler for potteries in Ohio and Trenton, including the Trent Tile Co. and the Providential Tile Co. in Trenton, producing major work as late as 1917, when he modeled a parian portrait bust of Walter Scott Lenox for the Lenox Company.

          Dec. 08, 2013

          Isaac Broome (Canada/U.S./Phila., 1835-1922)

          Est: $3,000 - $5,000

Isaac Broome (b. Canada/American/Philadelphia, 1835-1922), a marble bust of The Right Reverend Alonzo Potter (1800-1860), the bishop of the Episcopal Church in Pennsylvania, signed "I Broome, Sculpt. Philadelphia 1858", now on a later cast stone plinth, statue, h. 29", pedestal, h. 44-1/2". Broome, born in Canada, was raised in Philadelphia and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where he began to exhibit in 1855, and where this bust was shown in 1858. Previously, he had traveled to Europe and held a studio in Rome, producing his first marble bust. His career as a marble sculptor was brief, and extant examples of his work are very rare, according to a catalogue entry of a bust of a young boy by him, at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Broome went on to establish Etruria Pottery in Trenton, New York, where among other accomplishments, he designed and modeled the iconic Baseball Vase, which won a medal at the Centennial Exhibition. It is now owned by The Detroit Historical Museum. Numerous examples of his ceramic arts are included in major museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, New York.
