Gov. John Brooks DS Appointing Justice of the Peace

          Est: $200 - $300

John Brooks Boston, MA, November 29, 1817 Gov. John Brooks DS Appointing Justice of the Peace Partially printed DS Partial-printed document signed by John Brooks (1752-1825) as Governor of Massachusetts, Boston, MA, dated November 29, 1817. 1p, measuring 9.75" x 16". The document names Ebenezer Brooks of Harwich (no relation) "to be one of our Justices of the Peace, within and for the County of Barnstable for and during the term of seven years…". Boldly signed "J. Brooks" at top left, and countersigned by Alden Bradford as Secretary of the Commonwealth. Uneven age toning, creasing, and tearing near folds; areas of paper loss to top and bottom edges, slightly affecting Bradford's signature. Good to fair overall. John Brooks was an American doctor, military officer, and politician from Massachusetts. He served as the 11th Governor of Massachusetts from 1816 to 1823, and was one of the last Federalist officials elected in the United States. Trained as a doctor, Brooks was an officer of the Reading, Massachusetts militia when the American Revolutionary War broke out, and led his troops in the Battles of Lexington and Concord. He served under George Washington in the New York and New Jersey campaign of 1776, although he missed the Battle of Trenton due to illness. Later in 1777, Brooks was part of the relief force for the Siege of Fort Stanwix, and led a successful assault against British positions in the key Second Battle of Saratoga. This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses. JOHN BROOKS

          Est: $200 - $300

JOHN BROOKS (1752 - 1825) American revolutionary patriot and physician, Brooks was a Concord Minuteman who also helped fortify Bunker Hill on the night preceding the battle. Unsigned A.L.S. entirely in Brooks' hand, 2pp. 4to., Medford, Nov. 9, 1820 blasting Gen. John Burgoyne. In part: "...I was not present with the 'advance corps' of the army under the command of General Lincoln on the 8th of October 1777...our cannon had annoyed the British army while performing that military rites of [?] at the interment of General [Simon] Fraser. It was long after this I heard the explanation given to the cannonade which you mention to have received from...General Winslow...General Burgoyne's plaintive description of the scene has never made any impression on my judgement...I feel perfectly willing that the account as stated by the General himself should go down to posterity, if the future historians of his nation should think fit to perpetuate the whining plaints of a misguided, ostentatious & fallen Chief...no military man...will impugn the conduct of the American army in the instance complained of, as violating the laws of humanity or war...". Near fine.
