Illustration for "There was a Crooked Man" in Ring O' Roses, London: Frederick Warne and Co. Ltd., 1922. 15 x 10 1/2 inches. Signed with initials lower right. Unframed. L. Leslie Brooke became famous for his classic picture book Johnny Crow's Garden (1903). He was a skilled landscape painter and illustrated Edward Lear's nonsense rhymes and popular nursery rhymes and tales within the tradition of Walter Crane, Kate Greenaway and Randolph Caldecott. He encouraged his publisher to accept Beatrix Potter's The Tale of Peter Rabbit (1902). 1922
