        John Charles Bromley (1795 - 1839 ) after Edward Prentis (1797 - 1854 ): The eleventh hour, 1835, Mezzotint Technique: Mezzotint on Paper Inscription: Signed and titled below the image: "Painted by Edward Prentis / Engraved by John Charles Bromley / THE ELEVENTH HOUR.", below with publication line "London, published June 1835 by Edward Prentis Hornton St. Kensington,[...] West Strand and Rittner & Goupil Paris." Date: 1835 Description: A man on his deathbed, praying fervently, is admonished by a cleric kneeling at his bedside and pointing upwards. The woman at the side of his head supports him and the other members of the household depicted are also in great distress; to the left, a large round dressing table with small drawers, crammed with crockery, medicines, a mirror, a Bible and clothes; a map hangs on the wall; after Prentis.         John Charles Bromley (English, 1795-1838) A Shepherdess on a Donkey with a Greyhound Beside signed upper left J C Bromley fecit 1808, aged 13 years etching 24 x 19cm John Charles Bromley was one of a family of four, all were noted engravers in line and mezzotint. He engraved the present study when he was 13. It is a copy in reverse of an etching by Nicolas Berchem (1620-1683) called the Shepherdess on a Donkey (Hollstein 12), at the time (1808) it would have been a natural choice for a trainee copyist
