FRANS VAN EVERBROECK (c. 1628– entre 1676 y 1693). "Still Life with Flowers and Fruit". Oil on canvas. Signed.

        Est: €30,000 - €40,000

FRANS VAN EVERBROECK (c. 1628– entre 1676 y 1693). "Still Life with Flowers and Fruit". Oil on canvas. Signed. Frame and re-drawn a hundred years ago. Measurements: 116 x 107 cm; 135 x 125 cm (frame). In this composition, Elias van den Broeck unfolds a real sensorial feast. On a stone plinth, variegated and splendid groups of flowers and fruits are spilled: opened pomegranates show their juicy interior, bunches of green and red grapes shine with the glow of ripeness, fleshy figs and peaches reach also supreme tactile values... The presence of the snail suggests a humid climate that favours the germination of nature after the rain. The evening light filters in from the background of the landscape, which favours the modelling of each piece of fruit through a skilful play of chiaroscuro that extracts the right textures, glazes and qualities. Elias van den Broeck was a Dutch still-life painter known primarily for his paintings of flowers and fruit. He trained in the Dutch Republic and worked for some time in Antwerp in the Habsburg Netherlands, where he had moved with his master Jan Davidsz. de Heem. He later returned to Amsterdam, where he was successful as a painter of flowers, fruit, still lifes of mushrooms and banquets. In 1665 he was a pupil of Cornelis Kick in Amsterdam, and in 1669 of Jan Davidsz de Heem in Utrecht. He is recorded in a document in which he states his intention to travel to Italy in 1672, but it is likely that he never did so. In 1673 he accompanied de Heem to Antwerp, where he became master of the Guild of Saint Luke. On 10 October 1674 he signed a deed in which he undertook to work for a year for the art dealer Bartholomeus Floquet. His early works reveal the influence of his first master, Cornelis Kick. His banquet still lifes are influenced by his second master, Jan Davidsz. de Heem. Like de Heem, he accentuates the sharpness of the flowers by adding a very fine outline in white or grey. The influence of Willem van Aelst is evident in the diagonal composition of his floral pieces. Despite these various influences, van den Broeck created a distinctive personal style. This personal touch is visible in his floral pieces, in which he evoked a nocturnal atmosphere with strong light effects.

After training in Amsterdam for four years, he became a pupil of Jan Davidsz. De Heem in Utrecht in 1669, one of the greatest Dutch still life painters of his time. Van den Broeck is recorded back in Antwerp in 1673, where he became master in the Guild of St. Luke and where he married in 1677 and had three children. He would return to Amsterdam in 1685 and remained there until his death in 1708. Van den Broeck's oeuvre is undoubtedly influenced by that of De Heem. Both of their still lives, whether of flowers or forest floors, are particularly celebrated for their meticulous attention to detail. This work similarly combines a brilliance and harmony of colour with an accurate rending of the subject matter, be it the flowers in all their variety, the snail on the left, or even the smallest drops of water. In his artists biography, De groote schouburgh der Nederlantsche konstschilders en schilderessen (1718), Arnold Houbraken mentions that Van den Broeck even kept a garden outside his house in Amsterdam purely for his studio needs. Van den Broeck's works are widely collected and part of renowned museum collections such as the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam and Boijmans- Van Beuningen, Rotterdam.

Forest Still Life with Butterflies and Frog

        Est: €8,000 - €12,000

BROECK, ELIAS VAN DEN 1651 Antwerp - 1708 Amsterdam Title: Forest Still Life with Butterflies and Frog. Technique: Oil on wood. Measurement: 29 x 21.5cm. Frame/Pedestal: Framed. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. This still life with undergrowth was long attributed to Carl Wilhelm De Hamilton until Fred G. Meijer recognized the characteristic features of Elias van den Broeck's style. The detailed rendering of each rib of the leaves, the stems of the flowers, and the wings of the butterflies, as well as the organic arrangement of the spatial elements, which not only stand side by side, but form a convincing dialogue, are in keeping with this artist's style. There are still some unclear points in the biography of Van den Broeck, especially about his education. Based on the 18th century art historical sources, the artist was born in Antwerp and was considered the best apprentice of Ernst Stuven. According to more recent studies, he was trained instead by Cornelis Kick in Amsterdam and then arrived in the workshop of Jan Davidsz de Heem in Utrecht in 1669. The painter was one of those artists who (like Otto Marseus van Schrieck) pressed real butterfly wings into the wet painting preparation instead of painting them, which is what was originally done in this painting. Van den Broeck painted all kinds of flowers, grasses, snakes, and salamanders that he could study in a garden created by himself for the needs of his profession as a still life painter. We thank Fred G. Meijer, Amsterdam, for confirming the attribution of the present painting on the basis of a high-resolution digital photograph. Explanations to the Catalogue

Although it is not signed, the traditional attribution of this opulent still life of flowers, grasshoppers, snails and lizards to Elias van den Broeck is accepted without question. Characteristic for this artist, who according to Houbraken was born in Antwerp and active in Amsterdam, is the particularly detailed depiction of the noticeably large, textured leaves. His usual repertoire is here enriched with various insects and small reptiles. In 1685, Van den Boeck moved to a house in the Amstel outside of Utrecht, and there tended a garden in which he grew the plants painted in his works.

ELIAS VAN DEN BROECK, A VASE WITH ROSES, TULIPS, ANEMONES AND VINE LEAFS A VASE WITH ROSES, TULIPS, ANEMONES AND VINE LEAFS Signed lower right: E.V.D. Broeck Elias van den Broeck is among the most important Dutch painters of still lifes in the second half of the 17th century. He studied under Jan Davidsz de Heem in Utrecht in 1669, and accompanied him to Antwerp in 1673. Van den Broeck returned to Amsterdam in 1685, but chose to reside on the outskirts of the city, where according to Arnold Houbraken he kept a garden, effectively growing his own still life motifs. His pieces show an immense painterly quality, and this certainly applies to the full, red blossom of the poppy, its large leaves and the light falling crisply into the painting from the left in this work. Fred Meijer has confirmed the authenticity of this painting.

A painting of similar size with a similar composition can be seen in the collection of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Characteristic of van den Broeck´s work is the diagonal composition and the prevalence of light from the left; illuminating the centre of the composition. In addition, an enjoyment in the accentuated depiction of veins is evident. His paintings are of a particular painterly quality; the best of them reaching the standard of Rachel Ruysch.
