          Roger Broders (1883-1953) was a French artist and illustrator working in the early twentieth century. He is well known for his many travel posters, which feature scenic regions of France. He developed a simple design format that showcased the location with bold colors and minimal text. He often traveled to the locations he pictured via his sponsor P.L.M. railways. Broders’ relationship with P.L.M. began through a connection with his wife, which would prove fortuitous for the artist. Although his posters are well known and highly sought after, he produced less than 100 designs in his life. "Villefranche is a privileged stopover for cruise ships coming to anchor in the harbor that drop their passengers on land for a sightseeing tour . . . Broders illustrates this new tourism by a large ship pointing its bow towards [shore]. The docks are home to traditional fishing boats, tartans and feluccas, and luxury yachts belonging to a privileged few aristocrats and millionaires" (Azur p. 154). Condition B+: minor creases, repaired tears and darkening at edges; minor abrasions in image; minor overpainting along unobtrusive horizontal fold; restored bottom left corner. More than just the joyful expression of an enthusiastic young woman greeting the day and embracing the climate on the Cote d'Azur, this poster has been cited as a classic example of shifting social mores, as well as a shift in the design of travel posters themselves. Here, the traditional "aristocratic or upper middle-class woman in a long crinoline dress who is carrying an umbrella in hand to protect herself from the sun [who was depicted in many turn-of-the-century travel posters], gives way to a young, buxom sun worshiper" (Azur p. 19). This image, evoking the stylish, languid reminiscences of an F. Scott Fitzgerald story, is an uncanny example of art imitating life, imitating art. Fitzgerald and his wife, Zelda, stayed in this Riviera town in 1926, and it was during his time there that he began writing his novel Tender is the Night. The stylistic rendering of the main figures is too sophisticated to have been early in Broders' career. A visual chronology of Broders' works shows that he began to master the use of diffident characters with elongated bodies in 1928. In the Haute Savoie region of France, Lake Annecy is only 50 kilometers from Geneva, Switzerland. The beautiful Alpine lake is ringed by famous resort towns such as Talloires and Menton and has been depicted in many different travel posters. Here, the viewer's eye is drawn to the red-roofed houses nestled in the calm green hills, while the pastel mountains in the distance and the quiet blue lake convey an enviable sense of serenity. "White Coal" was a term given to clean hydro-electric power, in contrast to power produced by burning black coal. Broders, as always, takes liberties with colors, and they again prove most effective, with the brightly colored bus and flowers at bottom, the yellow sky, and the mauve mountains between making it all very inviting. Maurice Dupuy, Paris DESCRIPTION: Broders designed a pair of posters for the French Alps resort of Mont-Revard, one presenting a winter-paradise panorama to the public at large (see PAI-LXII, 112) and this one, a summery companion featuring the Grand Hotel. In the period between the wars, Roger Broders was the finest designer of French travel posters. Many, including many of his best, were for the French railways—in fact, the majority of them were for a single company: the Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée. “Roger Broders was the creator of a very graphic style, whose simplified lines mark a new period in the tourism poster and usher in the style of the 1930s. His large flat areas of color recall the Cubists, Kandinsky, Severini, La Fresnaye and Delaunay. Condition B+: small replaced losses in corners; minor repaired tears at edges; dark blues faded. The Monte-Carlo Country Club, which boasted twenty-one tennis courts overlooking the Mediterranean, was inaugurated in 1928 with a momentous event attended by members of European royal families. Broders emphasizes the glamorous members of the club and its exquisite setting to create one of his best posters. The elegant couple is depicted in Broders' signature manner, using only flat planes of color. He creates exceptional depth-of-field using the different levels of tennis courts, spectators in the grandstands and the beaches in the distance. His handling of shadows and the bright Riviera sun is masterful, crowned by the slivers of yellow sunlight which silhouette some of the figures. "An outstanding poster which combines elegance with the grandeur of the landscape" (Azur p. 249). Condition B: repaired tears at edges, some into text and image; replaced and overpainted losses at edges of image; abrasions in image; repaired pin holes in corners; colors slightly attenuated; linen trimmed to edges. In addition to depicting the spa building (St. Honore les Bains was renowned for its therapeutic waters) and the stunning setting in the middle of France, Broders also focuses on the leisure activities and fashions of the elegant people who travel to this resort. The man's sweater is one of three representations in Broders' work of the "W" pattern, which Lepeuve [in his book] suggests was a style knit by his wife. The woman is clothed in the manner of Suzanne Lenglen, the great French tennis star of the 1920s, who popularized sleeveless shirts and skirts for female tennis players, as well as the fashionable bandeau seen here wrapped around the woman's head.
