Károly Brocky Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1808 - d. 1855

Károly Brocky, or Charles Brocky (Temesvár, 22 May 1808 – London, 8 July 1855) was a Hungarian painter.

He was the son of a hairdresser, who died whilst his son was still young. To gain a living the youth joined a body of strolling actors. After passing through many vicissitudes, he was at length placed in a free drawing school at Vienna, whence he went to Paris, where he studied at the École du Louvre. When about thirty years of age he visited London, where he took up his abode. His first contribution to the Royal Academy was in 1839, and from that time he exhibited portraits, ideal subjects, and miniatures on ivory somewhat frequently; amongst others a 'Nymph ' (in oil) in 1850, and 'Spring,' 'Summer,' 'Autumn,' and 'Winter' in 1852. He died in 1855. A sketch of his life by Norman Wilkinson was published in 1870.

In a gilt metal frame. 5.2 × 4 cm. Fine cracks. Provenance: - Christie's Geneva Auction, 12 May 12, 1987, lot 190. - Private collection, Switzerland. The person depicted could be Prince Gustav of Vasa (1799-1877). He was the son of King Gustav IV Adolf of Sweden and Queen Frederica and served as an Officer in the Habsburg Amy. In 1836, he was promoted to Field Marshal of the Austro-Hungarian Army. --------------- KAROLY BROCKY (1807–1855) Ovales Brustbildnis eines jungen Offiziers in weisser Uniformjacke mit schwarzem Kragen vor einem roten Vorhang. Mai 1987, Lot 190. - Schweizer Privatbesitz. Bei der dargestellten Person könnte es sich um Prinz Gustav Vasa (1799-1877) handeln. Der Sohn von König Gustav IV Adolf von Schweden and Königin Frederica diente als Offizier des Habsburger Heeres. 1836 wurde er zum Feldmarschall der Österreichisch-Ungarischen Armee befördert. ---------------
