SAMUEL FREDERICK BROCAS (1792-1847) View of the Four Courts on the River Liffey, Dublin Signed and inscribed Pen, Ink and Watercolour, 36 x 57.5cm Provenance: Sale, these rooms, Dublin 9th December 2009, lot no. 102 The present drawing of the Liffey and The Four Courts by Samuel Frederick Brocas became one of twelve views of Dublin, engraved by Henry Brocas for the works Topography of Ireland. This work was to be published in numbers, each containing two engravings with letterpress descriptions. Examples of these prints can be seen in the National Library of Ireland.

SAMUEL FREDERICK BROCAS (1792-1847) The General Post Office, Dublin Signed, inscribed and dated 1818 Pen, ink and watercolour, 36 x 57.5cm Provenance: Sale, these rooms, Dublin 4th October 2006, lot no. 43 Samuel Frederick Brocas was born about 1792 the son of Henry Brocas Snr and brother of James Henry, William and Henry Jnr, all artists. Samuel studied at the Dublin Society’s School and won numerous medals for flower paintings, etching and figure drawing. Strickland wrote that ‘’He practised in Dublin as a landscape painter, both in oils and watercolour, and his works painted broadly and good in colour possess considerable merit.’’ His best known works are views of Dublin. His series of twelve of these views were engraved by his brother Henry. He died in 120 Lower Baggot Street on 14 May 1847.

Frederick Brocas (1792-1847)'Howth Harbour and Ireland's Eye' and 'Portmarnock Strand from Howth'Watercolours, 30 x 43.5cm (11¾ x 17'') and 29 x 43cm (11½ x 17''). (2)Born about 1792, Samuel was the second son of Henry Brocas. He attended the Dublin Societys School and was a multiple prize winner for flower painting, etching and figure drawing. Strickland notes that he practiced as a landscape painter in Dublin both in oil and watercolour and that his works possess considerable merit. He was a contributor to various Dublin exhibitions in 1804, 1809 and 1812 while he exhibited at the newly formed Royal Hibernian Academy from 1828 to 1847, the year of his death. His topographical views in the environs of Dublin are perhaps what he is best remembered for, with many of his drawings being engraved by his brother Henry Jnr.
