Condition A-: minor creases, abrasions and slight darkening at edges; unobtrusive speckling at edges and in image. Mounted on paper. One of at least two posters the artist designed for this seaside resort north of Liverpool. The other, similarly featuring a beautiful young woman raising her arms to the sky. Here, a windswept golfer is playing through a sandtrap in view of the Lytham Windmill. rare. We could find only three copies at auction since 1992. Not in Furness vol. 6.

        BROWN JACK IN THE PADDOCK by William Smithson Broadhead (British, 1888–1960)

        Oil on panel, 17” x 26” Signed Provenance: Richmond Gallery, London Brown Jack, a bay gelding by Jackdaw out of Querquidella, ran over hurdles, winning the Cheltenham Champion Hurdle in 1928. On the at he won the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Ascot an impressive six consecutive years (he was 10 when he won his sixth). He is the only horse to accomplish this feat, and to mark this great achievement a bronze of him by Alfred J. Munnings can be found in the paddock at Ascot. Brown Jack was held in such high esteem his skeleton was displayed at the Natural History Museum in London. He was known as a horse who won with style and thus won the public’s adoration.

        CONNETT ON THE HENRYVILLE Broadhead, a British painter known for his illustrations for periodicals, travelled around the world living the "sporting life." He eventually settled in Middleburg, Virginia, in 1947. Broadhead painted this as a gift to his friend Eugene V. Connett III, a Princeton graduate and the founder of Derrydale Press. Considered the greatest sporting book publisher of all time, he told Time magazine that "a bottle of Scotch and a map of Ireland" gave him the name for the company. While at the helm of Derrydale, Connett hunted and fished with some of the greatest sporting artists of the 20th century.

        EDDIE ARCARO UP IN JEFFORDS SILKS Hall of Fame jockey Eddie Arcaro (1916-1997) rode to victory in more American classic races than any other jockey in history and remains the only jockey to win the American Triple Crown twice. Arcaro is captured sporting the silks of Walter M. Jeffords (1883-1960), one of only five people to be named an Exemplar of Racing by the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame.

A hardback sketch book containing numerous pencil caricatures and studies, over forty one pages used, some with several drawings per page, several using the whole page with pencil annotations, includes self portrait, humorous, military caricatures of soldiers, beautiful ladies, one of a horse, one entitled 'Brooklyn trams at Coney Island', dated June 1914, 20 by 24cm (approx. fifty nine individual drawings, full list of illustrations available on request). Plus one loose leaf illustration of a beauty and a postcard to the artist from a family member dated 1906 ** Smithson Broadhead is well known for his iconic poster designs for LMS and LNER Railways, his horse paintings and as a book illustrator. He lived for many years in the United States.
