Ausst. Kat. Werke alter Meister in Mainz, Ausstellung im Kunstgeschichtlichen Institut der Johannes-Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, 7. Mai bis 30. Juni 1968, Kat. See gelegenen Ortschaft Gatehouse of Fleet stammt.

      Nov. 27, 2021

      Francesco Brina (1540-1586), Archangel Gabriel

      Est: €5,000 - €7,000

A beautifully painted copper shows the portrait of the Archangel Gabriel, with a narrow face, which, however, reveals the pleated robe covered with a fine and virtuous curtain, the wings on the back, and also the iconographic attribute of the character, the cartridge inscribed with AVE GRAZIA PLENA. It is therefore part of a diptych that had a Virgin of the Annunciation on the other side; so much so that the Archangel has his mouth open and speaks as if he were greeting Mary. The state of preservation is almost perfect, and all parts of the painting are legible. Most of all, you can understand the quality of the painting and the subtle play of light.

      Francesco del Brina (Italian, 1540-1585)

      Est: $7,000 - $10,000

Francesco del Brina (Italian, 1540-1585) , "Madonna and Child with a Young St. John The Baptist", tempera on panel, signed "Brina", inscribed with numbers including "42 / D. 172 B" and remnant of old red wax collector seal en verso, 34 in. x 26 1/2 in., unframed . Provenance: Estate of James Gallier, Sr., thence by descent in the family. Note: After his apprenticeship with Michele Tosini, Francesco del Brina specialized in compositions intended for private devotion, particularly scenes of the Madonna and Child. The painting offered here is an excellent example of his Mannerist style. Mannerism as a response to naturalism marked by dramatically illuminated scenes, elaborate clothing, elongated proportion and exaggerated poses. During the late sixteenth century, when the style was spreading throughout Europe, developed in Italy in line with the demands of the Roman Catholic church, which at the time of the Reformation sought to connect believers to the church all the more urgently and called for an art that would convey the true content of faith. Brina is credited with painting an Adoration of the Shepherds for the altar of Santa Felicita and an Annunciation with Saints for a chapel in the church of San Gaggio, both in Florence.

Brina (del Brina), Francesco: The Holy Family with St. Elisabeth and Young St. John

      Est: €35,000 - €40,000

Brina (del Brina), Francesco Florence 1529 - 1586 Ca. 1550. Oil on wood. 63 x 44cm. Framed. Provenance: Private ownership, Switzerland. Certificate: C. Falciani, Florence, after examination of the original on 10.05.2010, a copy is available. The present painting was recognized in 2010 by Carlo Falciani as a personal work of the Florentine painter Francesco Brina and is of museum quality. The attribution is based on comparisons with the \"Holy Family with the Young St. John\" from the Uffizi collection and with the panel with \"Christ the Risen and Saints\" in the church of Santa Trinita in Florence from 1552. Of particular importance is the stylistic orientation of this painting to prototypes by Leonardo, at a time when artists in Florence tended to train themselves more on works by Michelangelo. The homage to the famous master from Vinci is particularly evident in the sfumato painting and the tender embrace of the Child Jesus and Saint John in the foreground. The strong expressiveness of St. Anne's face also refers to Brina's interest in German painting, probably under the influence of the Dürer recipient Pontormos (1494 - 1557). The present composition was particularly appreciated by the Florentine collectors who commissioned Brina to repeat it. Another, somewhat larger version of the painting (oil on wood, 95.8 x 73.7 cm), which is less detailed, is known. Explanations to the Catalogue Francesco Brina (del Brina) Mannerism 16th C.
