BRINDESI, Jean. Costumes turcs de Constantinople. Parigi, Lemercier, [1855] In folio, mm. 510x410. Legatura in tela nera bradel, piatto anteriore con cornici decorate a secco, al centro titolo entro grande festone impresso in oro, dorso liscio. Edizione originale. Leonora Navari: “There was in fact an actual museum of costume in Contantinople called the Elbicei Atika. Originally it had been located in the armory of the Seraglio [...]. Brindesi may be using the name metaphorically, or these plates may have been drawn from pieces in the Museum collection.”Atabey 151; Blackmer 206; Colas 446; Lipperheide 1438; Vinet, n° 2340; Bobins, I, 121. The splendid, hand-coloured plates depict the costumes of the Ottoman court during the reign of Mahmoud II; Brindesi modelled his subjects by portraying the costumes on display in that museum, also documenting the attire of government representatives and military dignitaries. The first panel depicts Mahmoud II wearing ceremonial dress. The full title of the work is: 'Elbicei Atika. Musée des anciens costumes turcs de Constantinople' Elbicei Atika was the name of the costume museum in Constantinople, originally in the armoury of the seraglio. Leonora Navari: “There was in fact an actual museum of costume in Contantinople called the Elbicei Atika. Originally it had been located in the armory of the Seraglio [...]. Brindesi may be using the name metaphorically, or these plates may have been drawn from pieces in the Museum collection.”

Türkei - Osmanisches Reich Brindesi, Jean Elbicei Atika. Paris, Lemercier, (1855). Gr.-Folio. OHLdr. mit Gold- u. Blindprägung auf Deckel. Lipperheide 1438 - Colas 446 - Hiler - 115 - Blackmer 206 - The Ottoman World 151 - Prachtvolles Tafelwerk in leuchtenden Farben und teilweise in Gold gedruckt, teilweise im Goldrahmen, die Kostüme des Osmanischen Reiches aus der Regierungszeit von Mahmud II. (1808-1839) wiedergeben. - Einige Seiten etwas stockfleckig, sonst ordentliches Exemplar. Sehr selten. Turkey. - Ottoman Empire. - With color lithogr. title and 22 color lithogr. costume plates. Gorgeous plate work in bright colours and partly printed in gold, partly in a gold frame, reproducing the costumes of the Ottoman Empire from the reign of Mahmud II. (1808-1839). The panels show high dignitaries and military officers in their costumes during the reign of Mahmoud II (1808-1839). Elbicei Atika was the name of a costume museum in Constantinople, originally in the armoury of the Seraglio in Topkapi Palace. It could be that Brindesi modelled his subjects on the exhibits of this museum, or that he used the name metaphorically. Mahmoud II in ceremonial dress is one of the subjects on plate 1.- Some pages somewhat foxed, otherwise a neat copy. Very rare.
