      Fredda Brilliant,  Polish 1903-1999 -  Helena Normanton K.C., 1955;  plaster, signed and dated on the side 'Fredda Brilliant 1955', H55 x W46 x D30.5 cm: together with another plaster bust of a gentleman from the same year of similar size (2) (ARR)  Provenance: the Studio of the Artist;  private collection  Literature:  Fredda Brilliant, 'Biographies in Bronze', Steimatzky / Shapolsky, 1986, p.157  Note:  in her book Brilliant describes the work as 'master plaster cast'. Normanton was the first woman to practice at the Bar in 1922, first woman to appear in the High Court. She was honoured in 2021 by the installation of an English Heritage Blue plaque at her London home in Mecklenburgh Square and having chambers named after her on her 2019; the first after a woman.

      Fredda Brilliant, Polish 1903-1999- Ever Living - The Arm; bronze, signed, 93x47x10.5cm (ARR) Literature: 'Fredda Brilliant, Biographies in Bronze', Shapolsky Books, 1986, p.124. Note: A maquette of this piece was submitted as a proposal for the Yad Vashem Museum memorial. Fredda Brilliant was a significant Polish sculptor active in the 20th century. Brilliant travelled widely over her lifetime, producing sculptures of significant figures from across the world. Her portraits include those of Buckminster Fuller, J.F. Kennedy, Anton Chekhov, and Duncan Grant, and, whilst living in India, figures including V.K. Krishna Menon, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Indira Gandhi. She also completed significant public commissions in the UK, most notably her large-scale sculpture of Mahatma Gandhi in Tavistock Square, London. As such, Brilliant’s works are incredibly powerful documents of the political, cultural, and social developments taking place across the world throughout the 20th century.
